Have a Happy Day

Not everyone enjoys Halloween, but it is nice to celebrate being young.

For me, it's the one time during the year when I get to see my neighbors.

One Reviewer’s Take

I want to thank Anita for having me on her blog today.  It’s really an honor.  Most people don’t want a reviewer on their blog much less having them talk about reviews.

Okay, right to it…a little background on myself.  I live in East Texas, raised in Dallas, married with one son in 1st grade and work an EDJ.  I review for CBLS Reviews, The Romance Studio and The Forbidden Bookshelf.  I also have a review blog that I update semi-regularly.

Why the information about me?  To let you know, that I’m a real person, with a real life and real everyday issues.  I’m not a god, a fairy, or an ogre.  I bleed just like you do.  Why the dramatics about me?  I have some things that I want to talk to you about reviewing and what goes through my mind when I’m reading a book for review.

1. I get to pick the books that I review.  Bet you didn’t know that?  Well, I do and I choose books/authors/publishers that I normally don’t read or know much about.  I pick books that are way out of my comfort zone.  When I decided to review, I decided that I wouldn’t read books or authors that I was comfortable with.  In the year that I began reviewing, I have found authors, genres and publishers that I seek out on a regular basis.  I have been given books to review from authors for my blog and again, I follow the same guidelines if I was reviewing it for one of the sites that I review for.

2. When I review a book, I look for the following:  plot (does it hold my interest), characters (do I even like them), flow (am I having to start and stop all the time) and lastly, did the characters connect emotionally and was it believable?

3. When writing a review, I don’t give out spoilers, the ending, the conflict, nor do I give out plot points.  I will however, talk about what I did like about the book and what I didn’t.  I hate when book review blogs from individuals give you a dissertation on the book.  I mean, why buy the book in the first place?  The blog already told you everything that you needed to now and more.  This is becoming more and more commonplace with so many people reviewing books on their blogs and it really pisses me off.  I have books on my Nook that I bought that sadly, I’ll probably never read because of it.  Grrr…

4. Also, if you get a bad review, just remember, its only ONE reviewer’s opinion.  Some people are going to love your stuff and some won’t love it.  Reviewing is subjective and therefore, should be taken with a grain of salt.  That said if the review is snarky and/or down right rude and mean, please, please let the review coordinator/owner know.  That should not be tolerated at all.  That does happen and it puts all reviewers in a bad light.

5. Lastly, why do I review?  I review because I love to read.  Period.  Some reviewers crave the power they have over an author but for me that’s the wrong reason to review.  I review for the simple pleasure of reading and then telling people why I liked it.

If you’re an author, tell me some of your experiences good or bad with reviewers.  No names, please.  If you’re a reader, what do you look for in a review?  I’ve listed below links to where I review to check me out.  I look forward to hearing from you.

One last thing, contest…to one commentator a GC of $10 to either B&N or Amazon.  And you thought reviewers were stuffy and not human?

Thanks Marika for stopping by this is great stuff,

A Special Day for Women

Rebecca Felton was the first woman to hold a U.S. Senate office. She served for only twenty - four hours while senate was in session. She only held the office until a man could fill the office.

Read more about her at http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=f000069

Way to go girl, even if it took years for women to be elected into congress this helped us move one step closer to realizing our dream.

Featured Guest - Daisy Harris

A Guest Post by Studenstein star, Mr. Royce Harden

Hello Anita. Hello ladies…

Daisy is feeling under the weather today, so she asked me to guest post instead. She knew you wouldn’t mind, given your impeccable taste in men. And if you don’t mind my asking, did you do something different with your hair? Is that a new outfit? You look fabulous! Good enough to eat. If only Shani didn’t keep me on such a short chain…

Not that I mind. The chain, that is. Shani keeps asking me not to mention my collar in polite company, but I’m not what you’d call “polite.” Hell, Shani was an ice-queen when I met her and now I’ve almost got her convinced to have a three-way.

Sort of… Okay, I still have a ways to go on the ménage but she’ll get there eventually. My girl likes to think she calls the shots, but she always comes around to my way of thinking.

I suppose I should tell you a little about myself. I’m six feet tall. I weight one-seventy-five. Brown hair, brown eyes…

But that’s not what you really want to know. You’d rather hear about my past—my years as the premiere love-bot in Synadate’s stable. Well, I can’t share all the details. Client information was always strictly confidential. I can say this though—I never left a customer unsatisfied.

Much as I don’t like to kiss and tell, I do enjoy the occasional brag. Shani says it a weakness, but I can tell it gets her hot. So, there was this one time a female client hired me to tie down her husband. She wanted to lie on top of him while I…

Ow!

Aw hell, Shani’s back. I’ll have to wrap this up. Anita, ladies— I’ll make it up to you… Ow!

So let's hear the blurb for Royce's story.

Studenstein (Book two in the Love-Bots series)

A man built for sex… A woman who wants more…

Freedom fighter Shani Brown is determined to drag the ungrateful Royce back to her team in Seattle. Despite his denial of mistreatment, she wants to give him a chance at a better life. Due to her horrific past as an unlicensed love-bot, Shani never plans to have sex again. But Royce’s makers punish him remotely with crippling pain. His only escape is to orgasm. Never one to turn her back on a job, Shani soon finds herself servicing him—and soon after, caring for him.

Love-bot Royce Harden wasn’t looking to be rescued, especially not from the San Francisco BDSM club where he was having a perfectly good time. But rescued he was—by a hellcat bent on delivering him to her people. As Royce starts to trust Shani, he begins to dream of freedom. But freedom comes with a price. Royce must face his vanity, his makers, and even the loss of his sexual upgrades if he’s going to be the man Shani deserves.

And the excerpt

She pressed her mouth to his, shutting him up. Her breath tickled his cheek and she rubbed her hand along his stubble as if she thought he was perfect no matter what. After long moments, Shani spoke against his lips. “You stupid, stupid slave boy.” She pulled back far enough so he could see her roll her eyes. “How could you even think I’d care about all of that?”

“That’s all anyone’s ever cared about.” The words popped out before he could stop them and Royce winced at how petulant he sounded. “I mean to say… That’s what I’ve always been good at. Why people wanted me.”

Shani put her hand on her hip, her expression smug. “Didn’t I tell you flies weren’t worth catching?”

Royce felt a smile tug at the corner of his lips—a grin he’d never practiced and hadn’t been programmed with, an expression he was pretty sure he’d only ever shown to Shani. “I guess I shoulda listened, huh?”

She slugged his arm, luckily his uninjured one. “Yeah, good thing you’re pretty.” Shani leaned over and kissed his cheek, whispering in his ear. “Because you are dumb as nails.”

Now let's hear about Daisy

Birkenstock-wearing glamour girl and mother of two by immaculate conception, Daisy Harris still isn’t sure if she writes erotica. Her paranormal romances start out innocently enough. However, her characters behave like complete sluts. Much to Miss Harris’s dismay, the sex tends to get completely out of hand.

If you like science-y subplots, fantastical creatures, and red-hot chemistry, you’ll love Daisy Harris.

Review for Stedenstein

Royce Harden isn't looking to be rescued from the BDSM club where he works, but that doesn't stop
Freedom fighter Shani Brown. She is determined to drag him off to Seattle.

Along the way, Royce decides that being free might not be so bad as long as he doesn't have to suffer through the physical pain of not still being connect to the network.

An interesting tell of a love-bot, which I took to mean an electronic life form, but in true is a person that has lost his memory of his prior life and now is a slave to a corporation that used them however they chose.

The fight for freedom in this tale has the reader quickly cheering for this unlikely couple and turns up the heat with some evocative scenes.

Come back tomorrow to read the blurb and excerpt.

Another Excerpt from Black Dragon's Blood

“A woman with your level of dragon blood needs a man, needs to have his children.” His strong hand circled her forearm. She sensed the heavy pulse of his blood beating against her tender skin.

“Not a possibility, William, even if I did agree to marry you.” She tugged her arm from his grasp. “I’ve been married twice. In neither case did I have a child. With you, it would be no different.”

His eyes narrowed to slits. “Are you telling me you’re unable to bear children?”

“You’re an intelligent man, William. What do you think?”

“Your father didn’t tell me this.”

“Yes, well, why would he? It would have been counterproductive to his plan, wouldn’t it?” The angry tightening of his jaw told Amanda she’d gained her freedom.

Stepping around him, she slid the door open on the metal railing and stood for a moment staring at his back. Other more pressing business required her attention. If she was lucky, she could get home, pack and get out of town before William picked up her trail again.

Special Guest Roz Lee - An Interview with Her Hero - Elgin "Hud" Huddleston

First, let's learn a little about our guest.

Roz Lee has been married to her best friend, and high school sweetheart, for over three decades. These days she splits her time between their home in rural New Jersey, and Southern California, where her husband works. Even though she’s lived on both coasts, her heart lies in between, in Texas. A Texan by birth, she can trace her family back to the Republic of Texas. With roots that deep, she says, “You can’t ever really leave.”

(A Texas girl, myself, I can understand these sentiments.)

Roz and her husband have two grown daughters they couldn’t be more proud of, and are currently raising a ten-year-old Labrador Retriever, Betty Boop, who isn’t aware of her canine heritage.

When Roz isn’t writing, she’s reading, or traipsing around the country on one adventure or another. No trip is too small, no tourist trap too cheesy, and no road unworthy of traveling.

Welcome Roz.

Thanks, Anita for inviting me over to play today! I wanted to bring the hero of my latest release along, but Elgin said he was going to be tied up today (don’t ask, he was smiling when he said it). We met up at a local diner, where he took the time to answer a few questions for me. So, here’s a brief interview with Elgin ‘Hud’ Huddleston, my hero in STILL TAKING CHANCES.

Roz – Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today, Elgin. Or should I call you Hud?

Elgin – Elgin is okay. Not many people call me that, mainly just you and Mary Beth.

Roz – I spent some time in Prairieview this morning. You have quite a reputation in this town.

Elgin – I suppose I do, but that’s behind me now. I was sort of lost when I was a kid. You know, acting out, taking chances I shouldn’t have in order to get attention. Hell, maybe I was trying to kill myself, I don’t really know. I was a trial to my grandmother. I know that.

Roz – She raised you?

Elgin – Yes, and she did the best she could. I didn’t make it easy on her. I know she loved me, but she was probably relieved when I went out on my own.

Roz – How old were you?

Elgin – Seventeen. I’d saved up enough money for a bus ticket to Dallas. I packed a change of clothes , and left the day after I graduated from high school.

Roz – Wow! That seems awfully young to be on your own.

Elgin – Maybe, but I knew from an early age that I couldn’t be myself in this little town. I had needs that just couldn’t be met in a place like this. At least not back then.

Roz – It’s different now?

Elgin – Not much has changed in Prairieview, but Mary Beth is here. She understands my needs. If I’d met her when I was younger, maybe I wouldn’t have left in the first place.

Roz – Do you really think you would have stayed?

Elgin – You know me pretty well. *he laughs softly and gazes past me* No. I couldn’t stay here. If I had, even if I’d had Mary Beth, I probably would have ended up in prison. Or dead. I needed to find an outlet for my anger, and the shit-load of guilt I was carrying around. I wasn’t ready to let go of any of it. I didn’t even know what it was that drove me until Mary Beth made me see it.

Roz – You love her.

Elgin - *looks me straight in the eyes* Yes, I do. She’s the best thing that ever happened to me. If you hadn’t made me walk across the street and take a chance, I don’t know what would have come of me. I was in a bad place.

Roz – You’re a good man, Elgin. All I did was arrange for you and Mary Beth to meet. The two of you did the rest.

Elgin – Speaking of…*slides out of the booth and tosses a twenty on the table* I gotta go. I promised Mary Beth I would model for her today. She’ll spank me if I’m late. *winks*

Roz – What’s your hurry then?

Elgin - *flashes a blinding smile* I was supposed to be there half an hour ago.

We said our goodbye’s at the door. I have to say, Elgin is a new man since he met Mary Beth. She has a way with him that I never expected when I introduced them.

Now for a the blurb

After a mission in a South American jungle goes wrong, DEA Agent Elgin ‘Hud’ Huddleston returns to his boyhood home to lick his wounds. Despite his better judgment, Hud is drawn to the woman across the street, a petite Dominatrix with a freeze your balls off name.

Mary Beth Winters packed away her toys and put the BDSM lifestyle behind her years ago when she realized the men she dominated didn’t need her as much as she needed them. But when a troubled bad-boy, Elgin ‘Hud’ Huddleston, moves in across the street, she dusts off her toy box and risks her heart to help him heal.

And an Excerpt

His voice was low and gentle. Nothing like the voice she’d become accustomed to. “You can breathe now, Mistress. I won’t tell anyone.” No one had called her that in a very long time. Hearing it from his lips sent a tingle along every dormant nerve ending in her body, and made her want things she thought she’d never have again.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she lied through her teeth. The handcuffs picked up the band of sunlight streaming through the cherry curtain draped window, and reflected it around the room like a mirrored disco ball. “What are you going to do with those?”

“I’m not going to do anything with them, unless you tell me to.” He took a step closer, and she fought the urge to back away. “Tell me what you want me to do with them, Mistress. Do you want me to wear them?” His voice seduced her with its melodic timbre. “Do you want me on my knees, Mistress? Tell me what you want. Your desire, is my desire.”

“Don’t play with me, Elgin.” God, she couldn’t believe this. She should run like hell, but her feet refused to move. She studied his face. He might be toying with her, but something about the way he looked at her, like a lost puppy hoping she’d put a leash on him and take him home, got to her.

“I don’t play games.” He snapped the cuffs into the palm of his hand, closed his fist around them, and backed away from her. She hadn’t realized how close he’d come to her until he straightened to his full height and looked down at her. “I guess I was wrong about you. Go away, and leave me alone.”

“I’m sorry, Elgin. I haven’t…”

“It’s okay. Run along now. I won’t tell anyone about this little conversation. Your secret is safe with me.”

Also remember a copy of the book KINKY CUPCAKES will be given away to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour.

Inspiration for a Hero

Some times if an author is looking for inspiration for her hero, she might pull out a picture like this to help her build his character.

What would you say about this guy?

Anita

Featured Guest - Stormy Knight

Tells us what your hero.

What does he looks like?

Here's the heroine, Jocelyn's description:

The man was one gorgeous hunk. Huge chocolate brown eyes stared at her through a face that was slightly irregular, but sculpted. It was the kind of face that made women weak at the knees and men respect his presence. His body was almost body-builder perfect and his height towered over her stately five-nine frame. In fact he was perfect, but he had broken through all her defenses. He was uncomfortably close and she’d decided that if she were going to keep her sanity and him as a friend he was best relegated to the role of confidant.

What is his job?
Royce Quarterman is a business entrepreneur, owning an enterprise that sells specialty food items.

Who did you model him after?
Royce is a combination of all of the best and most annoying mannerisms I've noticed about former boyfriends I have had.

What is best trait? worst?
His best traits are unending patience and tenderness. But he can be blunt and if he reaches his boiling point, he can be rash and live to regret it.

Let's read an excerpt -
Turning as he approached, Jocelyn took her glass from him. “Thank you, Royce.” She leaned into him and smelled a whiff of clean, enticing men’s cologne and her knees went weak. There was absolutely no way she was going to fall apart and start coming on to him. He was staying a good friend, end of story, damn it. That meant making sure he knew he was not on her menu and others had potential. It would be best for her to let him know she was interested in sex with somebody who was here.

She combed the room for a target. “Royce, come over here.” Jerking on his free arm, she led him away from her friends to a spot halfway across the room. Then she motioned to her right. “See the man over there, the one with the single steak if silver in his black hair?”

Royce squinted in that general direction. “You mean the one with the hawk nose?”

She glanced up at Royce and noticed not only that his eyes had narrowed, but his mouth was in a thin line as he glared at the guy. She shook her head. “It looks more sleek and aristocratic to me.”

Royce let out a short grunt. “I guess to you it doesn’t appear as large as it really is because his chin is so pointed. You’d be shocked if you saw him close up.”

She took a deep breath. Royce wasn’t making this easy. “Could you just go over and strike up a conversation and suggest he join us?”
He smirked. “For crying out loud, Jocelyn, you don’t want to meet that clown. Kramer is a pain in the ass butthead of a bore lawyer.”

“You know him?”

He nodded. “His name is Alistair Kramer. The guy graduated with me at UVa.”

“Great! So, asking him to join is won’t seem unusual. You two were probably both in that gentlemen’s fraternity, we’re you?”

He shook his head. “I was President of what they called the Animal House. Don’t know if that loon streaked in front of the rotunda or what he did, other than bore everyone to death. Trust me when I say that if you met him, you’d be snoring in five minutes.”

“You’re supposed to be helping me. We had a deal.”

“I didn’t agree to introduce you to a loser. Just because he’s worth a lot is no reason to meet the man, much less have sex with him.”
Her interest was now piqued. “Great hair and money too, eh? Good deal.” Jocelyn crossed her arms. “Look, you may think he’s boring, but I doubt he’ll be talking law if we go out. I do have a way of changing the subject. He’ll be pulling off his tie in that same five minutes.”

“The guy probably wears the thing to bed.”

Jocelyn rolled her eyes. “Tell me the truth, what’s wrong with him really? Does he have some physical handicap? Can’t he get it up?”

Royce frowned. “Pardon me, but we haven’t discussed Viagra if that’s what you mean.”

Jocelyn shrugged. “Look, unless you’re aware of something that would make me gasp in disgust, get over there and bring him back. He doesn’t look like he’s missing any crucial parts and as long as it goes north and stays hard, who cares?” She winced at her own words. A little crass, but that should get her point across.

His mouth dropped open. “I can’t believe even you said that. You seem so normal until you get on the subject of intercourse. Tell me Jocelyn, are you only interested in his unit? If that’s the case, I’m sure I can find a great dildo for you to play with. Then you won’t have to worry about somebody shooting him right after you climax.”

She stepped back at the shock of his words. Okay, she deserved it. Better not stop the frontal attack until she got to the goal. She shook her head. “Not the same thing. Stop stalling Royce. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear you didn’t want me to find anyone.” She watched as he zoned in on her eyes and his own flared with heat. Her panties got wetter and all she wanted to do was jump him. This was dangerous.

“Live up to your part of the deal. Go retrieve my new stud.”

His face looked like it was chiseled out of granite. His fists were balled at his side. For one second, she wasn’t sure if he would come out swinging.

“Fine, Jocelyn, go ahead and screw up again. Just don’t come running back to me to bail you out.” As he moved forward, his cell phone rung. “Hello? Chai-Li? Whoa, whoa. Slow down. What’s wrong? Jesus, stop crying. Is Charlie okay? He what?” He froze in obvious shock. “I’ll be right there.” He punched off on his cell and stared back at Jocelyn. “I have to go. I just got a call. My partner’s dead.”

Blurb:
Jocelyn Trainer was getting bed shy. The last two men she’d bedded died minutes afterwards. Through both dilemmas, she’d leaned on Royce Quarterman, her HOT next door neighbor, and now found herself with a huge problem. How could she ask the man to help find her a sex partner when she wanted him to be it? And why did murder have to interfere?

A Fireman Hero

Before this man ever open his jacket, he can be a hero.

If you are in a burning building, having someone to save you is the main point.

He doesn't have to have rock hard abs or a hot body, just the ability to get you out of the building safely.

Now, in a romance novel, a hot body never hurts.

Here's to our heroes.
