EXCERPT:

Please note most of these have sexual content or language!

He flashed her what was she supposed was a conciliatory smile but looked more like a grimace. And that made her think of what he looked like when he climaxed. Dammit.

She really should shut up now, but she couldn’t seem to stop. “I was wondering if you, that is, if you were thinking of me…weren’t you?” she asked.

His eyes widened even as his lips tightened.

“Well, it’s only that, I wondered if… if it was just a passing thought or if it was more ... ” She trailed off.

He looked alarmed now and she cursed herself silently. “Erin,” he said, his voice strangled. “You don’t feel that I was asking you to do anything…inappropriate, do you? That I would try to make you do something—something you didn’t want?”

“No!” she exclaimed in dismay. “Of course not. I just meant that, well, if you were interested in me that way, well, I—” She took a deep breath and rushed out, “I wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to it.”

“You—” He broke off. She noticed detachedly that his hand was gripping the counter so tight his knuckles were white. He swayed forward as if to approach her but then leaned back. “Are you sure? Are you sure you don’t feel pressured? I would never ever want you to feel that you had to—”

“No, no. It’s not that, I swear. And the same goes for you, too. If you don’t want to, please don’t feel that you must—”

“If I don’t want to,” he repeated, sounding dazed. His eyes unfocused for a minute, and then pinned her. He stepped forward and then circled around, standing behind her. Her hair rustled and scalp tingled where his face leaned into her hair, as if he were scenting her.

He trailed a finger lightly from the crown of her head, down her hair, along her shoulder and her arm. It wasn’t an overtly sexual touch, but she found it highly erotic. The past two days of heightened arousal boiled over in her until she felt strung out with need.

“Please,” she whimpered, shocked at herself even as she said it. She considered herself a proud woman, probably to her detriment. Her circumstances, cleaning houses while her classmates drove their Mercedes to class, ought to bring her down, but she would not be cowed. She was like him—she never begged, not for anything, money, favor and certainly not sex. Yet here she was wanting—no, needing him, a feeling foreign but very real.

Similes - Can Add Depth

Writers like to use similes. Why?

I think it is because  they helps to ground readers. If I'm talking about an distant world, how can I explain to the reader what I want them to see. By using something they are familiar with like flowers.

Also it can add to a character's description.  She had a smile that lit up her face like a sunflower lights up the dry  parched dessert. You just can't turn away, you just have to smile back.

So what comparisons do you make?

She watched the sweat dripping down his hard body and felt drenched in downpour of sexual need.

How would you describe the above pictures?

In Need?

On vacation, and you didn't take your vibrator.
No worries.
Use the non-brush side of your electric tooth brush to have your thrill.
Portable, won't raise eyebrows and will still give you what you need.

He has it in his pocket.

Set on vibrate, a cell phone can be a gentle reminder it's time to have fun.

And you can set it off whenever you want.

Fun on demand. What more could you ask for?

Or maybe you want a fantasy?

How this one?
Wonder if he'd let us see what's under his skirt?

Character's Motivation

What motivates you?

Now, what do you think motivates others?

These are the beginning of what can motivate your characters.

All characters have goals, motivation and run into conflict. These are some of the essentials elements of developing a good story. Take time to craft each one for your characters can deeper your story and make for a better book.

In my book "Naked Rebel", Rane is out to win back her country. She'd lost everything, her family, her way of life, her home.  Being Nick's companion didn't take anything away from who she was. Instead, she wanted to help him in anyway that she could because he was trying to win back her country.

Did Nick know the truth about Rane's motivation? No, he saw her taking unnecessary risk and felt as if he needed to protect her.

Each were motivated by different things. Together they became a force to win a country's freedom.

Here is an excerpt from Naked Rebel:

Outside a while later, Rane studied the once-rich property of her father’s estate. The forest which covered a vast portion of the land now held only a few hundred trees. The air, filled with a brown hazy from the work being done in the mine, suffocated her.
Upon entering the shadow of a tree, Rane’s heart sank and her foot faltered at the sight of the sacred altar in front of her. Nick, by her side, reached out a hand to keep her from falling.
“Are you all right?” He grasped her elbow and guided her to the stone platform.
She sank down on the shrine and gathered her red cloak around her before offering up a special prayer. “Thank you.”
“No problem. I should have made sure you ate more before we came out for a walk.” Nick’s voice beside her drew her back to the presence.
“I’m, uh, fine.” Rane couldn’t tell him the real reason behind her sudden weakened state. The trees embodied her connection to this land, and she silently wept over the loss of her family and friends in a pointless war for power.
Grief consumed her, and she lowered her head to hide her emotions from Nick. He wouldn’t understand her need for revenge. He hadn’t lost everything he believed in to a man like Salzar. Otherwise, Nick would’ve killed him long ago.
An arm circled her shoulders, and Nick pulled her up against his chest. “Don’t worry just because you’re in over your head. I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”
She lifted her head. “What? I’m not in over my head. I asked for this assignment.”
He blinked as if surprise by her outburst. “Why would you do that? This is probably the most dangerous place you could be in this war.”
“Yes, and it’s my people who are dying because of the tyrannical rule of Emperor Salzar.”
“What? When did he become Emperor?” His grip on her arm tightened.
“About a year ago,” Rane barked and jerked herself free of his hold, her hips hitting the hard edge of the altar. “Because you live here you probably haven’t heard of the atrocities he’s performed against my people.”
Nick turned and stared down the path leading through the forest. “I have no doubt. The man is cruel.”
The small action of Nick’s jaw jutting out like he was clenching his teeth exemplified his feelings for Salzar. Lines circled his mouth, and he gripped his hands into fists.
“And you hate him?” The idea thrilled her. Perhaps, she could count on him to help her with her plan.

Hope this helps you develop your own characters,

Anita

Cream

CREAM
by Zenobia Renquist

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
She’s entered a world where blood, sex, and cash rules everything around her.
What do a four hundred-year-old vampire and a mid-level necromancer have in common? Money. Jeliyah needs it to pay off the people who trained her and Teaghan enjoys killing to get it. Together they hunt rogue vampires—assuming Teaghan can focus on something other than getting her in bed and Jeliyah doesn’t put a bullet in him first.
The uneasy partnership promises to be lucrative until Teaghan and Jeliyah get on the wrong side of a feud. Jeliyah is forced to use forbidden magic and finds herself bound to a man she should hate—but whom she can’t stop fantasizing about.
Every second they stay alive fuels a growing desire Jeliyah is unwilling to deny. Is it the magic? The danger? The only way to get the answers she craves is to outrun the enemy or kill them. She knows Teaghan’s preference but it’s Jeliyah who must put their mind-blowing sex aside and make the choice that will decide both their fates.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

First chapter online (link goes live 03 May): http://drb1stchp.com/2013/05/cream-by-zenobia-renquist/

Excerpt

Teaghan knew it. A coup was about to happen. He didn’t know the players and didn’t care. So long as the bills got paid, the person in power didn’t matter. From one leader to the next, nothing ever changed.

He said, “Fine. You want me. I get that. Leave the necromancer out of it. No one would miss me but take her out and you’ll have the higher-ups gunning for you and your boss.”

“You’re right, the higher-ups would be quite upset if we killed the necromancer, and that wasn’t my intention. The others wanted to have some fun with her before handing her over but that was all.”

Jeliyah gripped the door handle and her eyes widened.

Teaghan said, “The higher-ups won’t overlook you molesting one of their own.”

“That’s where you’re wrong. They’ve given us permission to do with her as we please so long we return her to them intact.”

Jeliyah yelled, “They would never do that.”

Fredrick chuckled. “Well, hello, Jeliyah. Ephraim tells me you smell of vampire seed and blood. Recent seed. Old blood. I had thought you would hold out against Teaghan much longer given your initial reaction to him. Either I overestimated you or underestimated him.” He made the vocal equivalent of a shrug. “Doesn’t matter since I felt the need to pass on the news of your little indiscretion to Hirsch, who then relayed it to the higher-ups. They are very displeased that a high-middle class such as yourself would give a vampire permission to invade her body. That displeasure graduated to anger when I informed them of the blood sharing as well.”

Oh please, no. No. No.

Teaghan grabbed Jeliyah’s hand in a firm grip to anchor her to the here and now. She clutched at him and stared at his profile. Tears rimmed her eyes. He knew she was holding it together by a thin thread of will. Images of the bleeding chamber raced through her mind. She was imagining herself in the place of the person she’d seen when she was young.

He told her through their link, I’ve got you, Jeliyah. Nothing’s going to happen.

Fredrick said, “Stop the car and give up. Make this easier for all of us.”

“Denied.” Teaghan released Jeliyah’s hand so he could snatch the phone off the dash and hit the end button.

Jeliyah asked, “What do we do? They want you dead and me—” Her words choked to a halt and she pulled in a shuddering breath. A single tear slipped down her cheek.

He retrieved her hand and squeezed it. “Easy there, necromancer. Don’t fall apart on me now.”

“Why? All you did was kill a rogue.”

“That’s why. It’s a changing of the guard. It happens every few centuries. Family infighting. They involve people from neighboring families who have been promised some little tidbit or other to help the wannabe head take power. It’s a story as old as the vampires. Seems you and I got in the way.”

Teaghan changed his destination. The enforcers probably knew which hotel they’d used by now and might be lying in wait. He steered the car back on the highway. If one family wanted him dead then his only protection was to seek refuge in another family’s territory.

While a risky proposition without petitioning for entrance first, the destination Teaghan had in mind came with a sponsor. He released Jeliyah’s hand once more to bring up a number he hadn’t called in years. He hoped it still worked.

Spice It Up

Coming up with better ways to keep the magic alive in a relationship is hard work. Some times we don't have the energy or the time to deal with keeping the romance going.

Hey, we have a job, kids, family, and responsibilities. You’re working as hard as you can to just get through the day, much less worry about an exciting sex life.

I couldn’t agree more, but it doesn’t have to be a big production. Little changes in your routine can reap rewards. Remembering to kiss your lover the moment you see them is a small task and one that shows you care.

Making the coffee, a glance to show you find them sexy, a slid of the hand over your lover’s back when they’re struggling to do something. Small touches.

Spicing it up are the little things you do which take but a moment and show that you care.

Also, join me today at  http://randialexander.com/2013/05/guest-anita-philmar/

You'll find another article about keeping the magic alive.

Author Interview with Blak Rayne

Interview
What genre do your currently write? And, is there a genre you'd like to write, but haven't tried yet?
At present, I write mm erotica, which may include suspense, mystery or drama, but always romance. I'd like to write fantasy, LOTR type stuff, which I'm working on.

Many authors use a nom de plume, and they may use one opposite to their own sex. Do you think an author's sex or sexual orientation should dictate what genre they write?
Never. Though I know it does happen.

Some authors have issues with character development, writer's block, plot summary etc. What is the biggest challenge you face when writing? How do you overcome the problem?
My biggest problem is staying focused on one novel at a time. My brain has a tendency to go everywhere and, as a result, I tend jump from project to project. A thought comes to mind and I have to write it down then I return to what I was doing originally. An overactive imagination is great for creating characters and plots, but not so good when it comes to completing a story. But, I'm retraining myself to concentrate and thankfully it's working.

What has been the single most successful marketing tool you've used to date?
There are several, but I'd have to say putting ads in a big newspaper (online and print).

What are you currently reading? The Prisoner of Azkaban
How do you measure success? Just being an author and doing what I love is success!

Just for fun–
What is your favourite drink? Chai Tea Latte or Japanese Plum Wine

Are you a cat or dog person? I've owned both. But, I still have to say cat.

Love or lust? You can't have one without the other. Definitely both.

If you could spend the day with any famous author, who would it be? And, why?
In all honesty, not one author really sparks my interest. But, if I had to choose, I'd say J.R.R. Tolkien (fantasy) or Kazuma Kodaka (yaoi). I know a very strange pair - considering one is dead and other speaks only minimal English. I love fantasy so Mr. Tolkien would be a treat. And, Ms. Kodaka is such an awesome artist! I'd love to watch her draw and talk yaoi.

If you could indulge free of any consequences, what would be your ultimate sexual fantasy?
OMG!!!! There are many men I find attractive, but the first one who leaps to mind is...Benedict Cumberbatch and I'd take him with a bottle of Japanese plum wine and a huge bar of Purdy's chocolate! You do the math! Love his voice! :P

Thanks for having me at your site, Anita!
Book Title: Older The Better (Coming Soon)
’The hardest part of loving someone is knowing when to set them free.’
Blurb:
Indiscriminate sex with strangers is the only pleasure Charles has left in life. No matter how much he wants a relationship, the memories of a painful break-up during his youth won’t allow him to commit—until a friend persuades him to confront the past—to confront the man who dumped him.
Taking his friend’s advice, Charles returns home, in the hopes of rekindling the romance with the man he lost. But, his father’s religious views and the backwater community he grew up in aren’t so understanding when it comes to same-sex relationships and, to his disillusionment, neither is the man he’s returned for.
Excerpt: (not edited)
Todd dropped his overnight bag at the base of the rear porch steps, and strode towards his father. Cinching the knapsack straps, Charles leaned to rest his shoulder on a support post at the top step.
At long last, Malcolm drove the axe blade into the chopping block and stood erect. Bracing his lower back, he patted a rag on the nape of his neck. Todd surprised his father with a tap on the shoulder. Soon as Mr. Forbes saw his son, he laughed and gave the man a hug. Charles kept to the sidelines, allowing them their privacy. Then, Todd motioned in his direction. He was pretty sure Todd had alluded to his presence, but he hadn’t heard a word over the deafening thud of his own heart.
Malcolm didn’t say anything at the onset. He removed his hat—a dusty ball cap—slapped it on the side of his leg and turned towards the house. Squinting, he put the hat back on, adjusting it by the bill. ”Charlie....”
“I wondered when you’d notice.” Charles kept his shoulder glued to the post, to control the shaking that had risen without warning through his legs; his nerves—every sensory receptor was on fire.
“By God,” Malcolm ascended the porch steps slowly, wiping both hands down the front of his shirt; it wasn’t in his nature to rush, ever. “Where have you been all my life?”
Dropping the knapsack, Charles smiled with a sense of relief as they shared a bear hug. It felt extremely good to hold the man, despite the fact that the fond embrace didn’t last. Malcolm Forbes was rugged as the surrounding terrain, and not the sentimental type unless something, for whatever reason, struck a chord. He differed from Todd and his almost model quality features. Todd’s physical traits like his ditzy personality were reminiscent of his mother—ash blond hair and brown eyes and an oval face. Where Malcolm had that sun-baked cowboy attractive about him with the great smile, silver streaked chestnut hair that was a little unruly and a set of smoky-blues that would’ve brought any man to his knees. His rough, square jawline didn’t match the baseball cap. Charles always felt he needed a real cowboy hat, a Stetson.
”The temperature must be near thirty already?” Todd remarked, brushing the perspiration from his upper lip.
”At least,” Malcolm said flatly, glancing at him. ”By lunch it’ll hit well over forty.”
”I guess summer is here. While you two catch up,” Todd gave their backs a slap simultaneously. ”I’ll make us some lemonade.”
”Fine, son.”
“Thanks,” Charles added.
The screen door creaked then banged shut, leaving the men to stare at one another in silence—a silence more stifling than the mid-morning air—which made their reunion all the more awkward and, bittersweet for Charles.
Hooking a thumb in a front pocket of his jeans, Malcolm cleared his throat quietly. “I never thought I’d see you again.”
“Todd asked me to come.”
“I gathered as much.”
The look of consternation on his face, told Charles he was an unsettling presence.
“What happened to university?” Malcolm asked quite suddenly as if searching for a topic to sustain the conversation.
“I graduated with a diploma in business management over ten years ago. Since then I’ve worked for several companies. Right now I’m job hunting.”
“How’s that going?”
“It’s going. I’m debating whether to upgrade my education or take a position that pays substantially less.”
“Big decision.”
“It’s huge. I’m not getting any younger.”
“You—“ Malcolm expelled a short, dull laugh and pointed to his own chest, “it’s me that has that problem.”
“Your age isn’t a problem.”
“You’re kind.... Has it really been that long?” He seemed doubtful of the time loss and even more doubtful that Charles was standing on his porch.
”It has. It’s been fourteen years.”
”That is a very long time. Well,” Malcolm gave his elbow a gentle nudge, ”come have some lemonade.”
”Sounds good,” Charles followed inside the house.

Sexy Lady from the past - Audrey Hepburn

"Sex appeal is something that you feel deep down inside. It's suggested rather than shown. I'm not as well-stacked as Sophia Loren or Gina Lollobrigida, but there is more to sex appeal than just measurements. I don't need a bedroom to prove my womanliness. I can convey just as much sex appeal, picking apples off a tree or standing in the rain." quote from Audrey Hepburn.

When asked if she would every write a biography, Audrey answered. "If I were to write a biography, it would start like this: I was born in Brussels, Belgium, on May 4, 1929 . . . and I died six weeks later." Having developed a case of whooping cough, her heart monentarily stopped but her mother acted quickly and slapped her on the back which saved her life.

Nameless by Claire Kent

NAMELESS
by Claire Kent

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
They named it anything but love.
After a failed marriage to a domineering man, Erin refuses to be controlled by anything or anyone. That includes Seth, the father of her baby—a man who was supposed to be only a one-night-stand, a man who’s used to always getting his way.
There’s a reason that Seth Thomas, a successful defense attorney, is often referred to as the Bulldozer. If something needs to happen, he makes it happen. That includes being part of his baby’s life—even if he never expected to be a father, even if Erin doesn’t really trust him.
They’ll work out an arrangement in the best interest of their baby—and if they occasionally have sex, well, that’s just an added perk—but they both agree on one thing.
What they have will never be love.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

Erin frowned. “Don’t start with that again. It was just a fluke. Not evidence of any particular talent of yours in bed.”

“If you say so,” he said with a little smile. “You want to stay the night?”

Erin thought about it for a minute. “Nah. It’s not late yet, so I think I’ll head back to my dad’s. I’m twenty-six, but he still worries sometimes.”

Seth’s face changed, and a haunted expression replaced the casual amusement.

Swallowing, Erin remembered the funeral he’d attended that day. She felt a surprising swell of tenderness rise up in her chest.

He glanced over at her and seemed to notice her expression. Their eyes met, and they shared something in the silent gaze.

Something abstract. Indescribable. Powerful.

Then it was gone.

Seth arched his eyebrows. “Then you’d better go assuage his worries.”

Erin snorted and rolled out of the bed to collect her scattered clothes. “I can’t believe you can use the word ‘assuage’ after the night we’ve just had.”

He grunted.

Giggling, she started pulling on her clothes. “That’s more like it.”

When she was fully dressed, she turned back to him. He sat on the side of the bed watching her—his expression thoughtful and guarded again, despite their light banter just moments before.

She knew what this encounter had been for him: a temporary reprieve, an escape, an interlude not connected in any way to his real world.

Exactly as it had been for her.

“Take care, Seth,” she said softly.

“Thanks. You too.”

There was nothing else to say. She felt a tiny clench in her belly.

But she and Seth shared nothing but a night of great sex, and there was no use in pretending that they did.
