@GoddessFish hosting An Absent Mind by Eric Rill

An Absent Mind
by Eric Rill

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A riveting new novel from Eric Rill, author of Pinnacle of Deceit and The Innocent Traitor, is about a race against time. The ticking time bomb is Saul Reimer’s sanity. His Alzheimer’s is going to be the catalyst that will either bring his family together or tear it apart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

She’s pushing me around like some kind of kid in the playground. I mean, I’m still okay, not gone off the deep end—yet. Why can’t she just let me be? Let me have the last whatever time I have to be happy. But that’s not her style. She’s still as pushy as ever, still the master controller. Still wants to run the damn show.

Today was a perfect example. She must have called Nat Friedman sometime during the night. I heard some noises while I was tossing and turning in bed. At first, I thought it was the cat, but I don’t think we have one. And besides, the sounds were too big. So it must have been her in cahoots with Friedman. I’ve suspected them for a long time. They’re trying to steal my money, making sure my final days are miserable and denying the kids what is rightfully theirs. Friedman was always a money-grubber. One of those two-bit lawyers who prey on their clients by jacking up fees to whatever they think they can get away with. He’s done it to me, to Arthur Winslow, to everyone who goes to him. Why we keep going back, I don’t know, except they’re all the same. I remember Mark Miller, a big shot tax lawyer with one of the major firms in the city. I referred a friend to him, and he hosed him so badly for doing almost nothing. Worse thing was, he didn’t even do what little work there was. He passed it down to some minion, showed up for a couple of meetings, and then sent a bill that would have sunk the Titanic—but that’s another story.

I can accept the overcharging, but I don’t think someone like Friedman should use his fancy degree and being a member of the Quebec Bar—big deal, member of the Bar—to take advantage of Monique. Although my guess is that the last few years she didn’t need a lot of coaxing. I think she’s been fooling around for a long time. But Friedman, he’s supposed to be my friend. Some friend, speaking to my wife in the middle of the night, conspiring to get rid of me so they can be together and steal all my money.

Well, I showed them today. Friedman wanted to be the guy who handles my stuff while I’m alive and wanted Monique to help him. Do I look like a schmuck? I know they’re both like vultures waiting for their prey to die so they can suck on its sweet flesh. They want the right to kill me. Yes, that’s correct—kill me. When you sign one of those things, and if you’re a little bit off your rocker, or in a … you know, like a deep-sleep thing, they can tell the doctor to kill you. In two seconds, they can send you to heaven or hell.

So I sat there and listened and nodded and whatever, and they thought I was being suckered by their sneaky plan. But when Monique left the room, I told Friedman I wasn’t going to let them do me in. He gave me one of his phony endearing smiles and assured me that wasn’t the case.
“What is the case?” I asked.

He said he was only trying to help me, to look after me, to watch over the family, Joey, Bernie, Florence, and, of course, Monique.

“Yeah, I bet you’re going to look out for the family,” I said. I told him I knew about him and Monique.

Again he plastered that sympathetic smile of his on his face, like he was so sorry for my inability to see the truth. Sometimes I think they take a full semester in law school learning how to do that smile. Friedman must have got an A. Anyway, I told him he wasn’t going to be the one who decided anything about my money, or when I die. He put his hand on my arm and asked me to reconsider, again giving me that damn beaming grin of his. God, I would have liked to have dented a few of those too-white teeth of his. But then he probably has big connections with the police, being a big shot lawyer and all. And I didn’t want to spend my last days in some stinking jail having those perverts try to make me their girl, or whatever you call it. Those guys are sick, really sick. Sicker than me. Can you imagine big macho guys doing that stuff to each other? No wonder they send them to jail!

Enough of that. Let me tell you how I handled the will thing. You see, at first, before I knew that Monique was fooling around, I was leaving her everything, so long as she took care of the kids and willed them whatever was left when she was gone. So while she was sitting in Friedman’s conference room, filing her nails, or whatever women do when they have nothing to do—which in Monique’s case is often. I mean volunteer work at the YMCA … big deal. She never really worked. I mean never had a real job. She always said she wanted to but that she couldn’t find work because she had no experience. Then when she got older, she said no one wanted to hire a woman her age. Gimme a break. If she wanted to get off her fat tush and find a job, she could have. But she preferred to have me sweat day and night to make the money while she played mahjong with her fancy lady friends. Well, they say you always marry your mother!

Anyway, while she was in there, I discussed it all with Friedman. Yeah, I decided to keep Friedman as my lawyer. I’m getting too sick to start changing at this point, and they’re all crooks anyway. He told me maybe I should just keep everything as is and that if I want to make changes in the future, I should let him know. That makes sense, I guess, because first of all, I’ll be damned if I’ll pay him to change my will twice—there would be almost nothing left! And besides, I’ll see how Monique behaves. Maybe I’ll leave her something; maybe I won’t.

Liquid Hypnosis
by Tina LaVon

Purchase at thewildrosepress

More innocent lives will be lost if Samantha Garrett, the DEA agent known as The Human Lie Detector, is unable to solve the mystery surrounding a secret formula that controls minds. Her career took a roller coaster ride after her last case went badly, but she still has a chance at the promotion dangling in front of her and she refuses to lose it now. While searching for the suspect that got away, she must fight her feelings for his brother and handle the repercussions from her last case, which haunts her still.

Kevin Brewster, a mild-mannered, dedicated doctor, has spent his life trying to make up for his father’s crimes. His work life revolves around a clinic helping those in great need with no resources to take care of themselves. To that end, he has become inventive and daring. In addition to his work there, he must now prove his brother’s innocence before the by-the-book DEA agent discovers their secret.

Excerpt:

He leaned in so close she could feel his breath on her cheek. She held her breath, waiting for his next move.
"Better than good," he whispered. He played with a strand of her hair, then ran his thumb along her cheek to her chin. "Samantha..."
"Yes." It took all her strength not to tremble.
"I'd kiss you, but I'm afraid you'd arrest me." He stepped back, his smile teasing.
Samantha could feel someone watching her. Looking toward the nightclub, she found Malone standing by the entrance. Apparently, he needed to see for himself that she was all right. She waved him off. He nodded and retreated back inside.
"Kevin," Samantha whispered.
"What?" His grin told her he knew what she wanted, but he was going to make her ask.
Samantha leaned against the car, hoping to achieve the same air of cockiness he'd displayed. She raked him with an appreciative look. The man had a body that was both broad and muscular. She instinctively knew they would fit perfectly together.
"I'll arrest you if you don't kiss me.
He placed his lips as close to hers as he could without touching, still waiting for her to make the first move.
"Do I intimidate you?" she asked.
"Do I intimidate you?"
"No," she lied.
He gently brushed the side of his face against hers and her knees grew weak.
"Are you afraid of me?" he asked, trapping her by placing both hands against the car.
"No."
"Then why are you breathing heavy?"

Flash From Past Posts - The Doctor's Deception

BACK COVER BLURB:

Hard-headed and straight-laced Dr. Stone Lassiter is a heart surgeon about to lose everything he’s worked his entire career for. He is locked in a battle of wills against the nurses of the surgical intensive care unit of Deerborne County General.

At first, the new doctor was definitely drool-worthy. Sexy or not, the nurses have had enough! Their secret weapon? Unsuspecting SICU nurse, Faith Daniels, a cool green-eyed blonde who turns Dr. Lassiter’s head every time she’s near.

Will the nurses’ plan to have Dr. Lassiter fall in love with one of their own work in softening him toward the nursing staff? Or will the little white lie Stone tells Faith destroy the fragile bond of love that has developed between them?

EXCERPT:

Faith opened the door and there he stood. She'd seen Dr. Lassiter in a suit and tie before. He didn't always wear scrubs while in the unit. But she should've known after her traitorous reaction to him lately, that tonight would be different--more personal.

Her breath caught.

Okay, to be fair, she did want his body. She could admit that freely to herself.

His honey blonde hair was damp and curled slightly at his collar. From the wet look, he'd waited until the last minute to get ready. Nothing vain about this man. The dark dinner jacket he wore accentuated his powerful shoulders and broad chest. The white shirt set a sharp contrast to his tan skin. Her fingers itched to loosen the simple black silk tie and unbutton the top buttons of his shirt to get to what lay underneath.

"Hello, Faith."

Slowly exhaling, she silently whistled and gazed into his eyes. Jeez, get a grip. Here she was undressing him before the evening had even begun. But, the heat radiating from the brown depths set off fire alarms in her brain.

Finally. Melted chocolate. Her gaze flew to his lips. How would he taste?

Try as she might, there was no shutting out reality. Her stomach quivered in tandem with her thoughts.

Oh, my.

"Hi, Dr. Lassiter," she said, breathless.

This is not a date. This is not a date. This is not…

His lips curved.

Flash From The Past Posts - Month Long Event

Hi everyone,

To celebrate having a blog since 2008, this month I decide to go back and feature some of the books I've had on my site over the years. The covers might have changed and they are at new outlets but they are still great reads.

I hope you enjoy revisiting these hot books.

So let's get started.

2005 EPPIE Award Finalist--Best Historical Fiction!

Despite the collar marking her as a slave of Dunn na Carraice, young Lin is fiercely determined to retain her pride and keep her family intact. That dignity bears a price, for Lin has drawn the wrath of Modred, the youngest prince of Orkney. His single-minded quest to break strong-willed Lin--by any means necessary—nearly succeeds.

Although Lin is accustomed to the death, disease, rape and famine that runs rampant in the slave hovel she calls home, it is when her beloved brother Dafydd is placed on the auction block that her warrior spirit becomes apparent to all who challenge her, and the shocking secret of her

Egg-cerpt:
"Oh, he is good," I whispered. I wanted to watch the prince's life drain from him, just as he was draining the spirit from me. My vow to stop rebelling forgotten, I envisioned Prince Modred's blood pooling at my feet.

"What was that, Lin?"

"The bastard is good. A worthy adversary. He knew precisely where to strike. Where it would hurt most. That is why I did not see him today. Oh, for a bard's curse."

"Lin, leave it. You cannot win against him."

"Ah, but I will. Just you watch me, Dafydd. So help me, I shall win." I heaved my bowl across the room towards the palace. Its contents flew in every direction, and people in its path ducked their heads to avoid being hit by the missile. "This is between you and me, prince. Attack me all you want, but leave my brother out of it."

Some Love for Betrayed Vows @KyannWaters

Hi Anita
Thank you so much for having me today. Betrayed Vows just released and I’m thrilled about the book.

Are your characters based on real people?
No, but I do have a friend who made the penitentiary his residence a few times. Landon says a few things that I learned from my interviews with my friend.
“There are only three things you need to know about prison,” he whispered as he held up three fingers. “Fight, fuck, or hit the fence. You learn real quick which one you’re going to do. Do you want to ask me, Gretchen?”

Do you have trouble saying goodbye to characters?
Sometimes. Some characters I’ll never really say goodbye to like Theron from my Blood Slave books or the 6 pack from Johnny Loves Krissy. They came to mean more to me than words on a page. I’m ready for Betrayed Vows to release. I’m ready to say goodbye to the characters even though I really enjoyed writing their story.

Do you have to travel researching your books?
Not really. I generally write about places I’ve been and know.  Betrayed Vows is set in my area. I changed it up, took artistic liberty, but the mountains, neighborhoods and large family life is all a page out of my own life. I’ve been to trials, parole hearings and prison visiting rooms. I’ve accepted collect calls from prison and put money on a prisoner’s books.

What is your favorite drink?
What is sad is that I can’t drink my favorite drinks anymore. I LOVE coffee. But more than a half a cup in the morning now gives me headaches and upsets my stomach.
I love Tanqueray and tonic, but I can’t drink alcohol anymore. I have mal d'embarquement syndrome. Which basically means I’m a little dizzy, like a slight alcohol buzz, all the time. Certain triggers make it worse. I’ve always had it but as I’ve gotten older, I have more triggers.

What’s something fans would find fascinating about you?
I’m not sure anything about me is fascinating. But I am a mess of contradictions. I grew in a religious home and married an atheist. I write naughty erotic romance but my favorite reruns on televisions are episodes of Little House on the Prairie. (I even own the seasons on DVD). My favorite season is winter, but I don’t enjoy being out in the snow.

Betrayed Vows
Everything in Gretchen Booker’s life was as she wanted it. A husband on her terms. Companionship without physical contact. That’s why she married a lifer. Who would’ve thought it would all come to an end after only ten years?
Life on the outside is not as Landon Booker expected. But how can he make a future for himself beyond prison walls when the woman who is supposed to love him wants to see him sent back to the penitentiary.
Crystal Evans isn’t a home wrecker. Landon needs a friend…someone who can help protect him from his conspiring wife. Falling in love wasn’t part of the plan.
Yet vows betrayed leave all three with something to lose—Crystal her heart, Landon his freedom, and Gretchen the life she had before.
To Purchase
Excerpt:
Gretchen was in the kitchen. Pots and pans clanked loudly on the stove. Patience, he told himself. She was nervous. Hell, he was scared, too. Unlike Gretchen, his had been a forced solitary life. She’d been comfortable with the previous dynamics of their marriage. That was the only sentiment coming through loud and clear.
Prowling around the room, he opened the dresser drawers. Curious, his wife saw him as a tighty-whitey man. Undershirts, white crew length socks, and a few pairs of black dress socks were neatly organized in the top two drawers. The bottom three were empty. Sliding open the mirrored closet door, he was surprised to see a couple pairs of jeans and some rather nice looking golf shirts. New white sneakers and a pair of men’s slippers sat perfectly aligned on the floor.
Leaving the bedroom with plain white walls and devoid of any décor, he walked down the hallway. Looking in another bedroom, he pulled open the closet doors and basically familiarized himself with the upstairs floor plan. Finally, he opened the door to the master bedroom.
Traces of Gretchen’s scent lingered on the air. A mass of pillows exploded on top of the elegant spread draping the bed. Creams and burgundies. Soft and feminine.
“Dinner’s ready.”
Landon jumped at the sound of her voice behind him. The reproachful gleam in her narrowed eyes took aim straight into his chest. “I was just looking around. Getting familiar with my home.”
“You should’ve asked. I would’ve shown you around.” She pulled the door to her room closed and headed back down the stairs.
Landon followed, feeling like a child rebuked for his ill-manners.
“Do you like salmon? It’s fresh. And I made rice pilaf.”
Landon sat at the table. “I’m used to tuna fish and instant rice.” He laughed at her wide eyes and open mouth. “Listen, baby.” He went to her and wrapped his arms around her shoulders. “Couples go through this after a long separation.” He lifted her chin. “We’re not strangers, but it still feels that way.” When she pulled back, he let her go.

This fantasy features a strong heroine, and was originally part of the 2008 EPIC eBook Award Finalist anthology A Time To... Volume 1 - The Best of The Lorelei Signal, from Wolfsinger Publications, which is now out of print. The strong female heroine possesses nobility, honor, and courage, and is a role model for women. The book is dedicated to all women warriors, whatever their battle, and is written by a female veteran.

By Kayelle Allen

A quickie read

In this scene from The Last Vhalgenn, the heroine, Raik, is alone with King Orix. They grew up together, but his new queen barred Raik from the palace. Raik is back to deliver news of a battle and while delighted to be with Orix, is nervous about his queen discovering them.
---
I followed Orix to the matching chairs where we used to sit in the evenings. The fire crackled and popped. Homesickness gnawed my heart, especially when the faithful old servant, Cyrus, greeted me. His unfeigned affection and fatherly embrace brought tears to my eyes. He set out a meal of bread, cheese, and wine and served me first, against all custom.
Orix watched, amusement touching his mouth and eyes. Before he left, Cyrus reminded me twice to call if I needed anything. Orix stood and went to the fire, hands held out to the flames.
"There's enough for four people." I broke off a hunk of crusty black bread. "Come share."
He returned, nibbling while I gulped, but said little. At last, hunger satisfied and body clean, I leaned back in the chair and lifted a goblet, watching the fire through the deep red wine.
"I'm sorry, Orix. You know. About Dahr. I didn't mean to hurt. You mean more to me than anyone alive."
He reached across and took my hand; interlaced his fingers, and then folded his arms and stared into the fire.
"I need her Raik. As much as I needed you."
Needed? I choked back words that anguish hurried to mind. I was as much his chattel as any of his horses. If one person could own another, then I was his, given to him at birth. Why should it hurt if he treated me as such?
"She's in danger of losing the baby."
"Again?" There had been a miscarriage four months after their marriage. "What's wrong this time?" I poured more wine.
"Some woman thing. Her doctors fuss around her bed all day. It's been weeks and she still has to stay on her back. I can't even see her. All her doctors are from Kellindahr. I don't think she trusts ours."
"This child is crucial, Orix. You need an heir to both lands. If it helps for her to have her own people around her, so much the better."
"Aye." He rambled on about a rallying point and the Kellindahrii people's love for their queen, while I mused over how much time would be lost begetting another heir. It struck me that if Dahr was abed she hadn't met Orix's needs. My throat tightened when I thought of him sleeping alone. I dared not look at the over-sized bed we'd so often shared. Nor did I look straight at him, afraid my rampant feelings would show. There was a war to finish. I'd been foolish to bring the dispatch. Being this close to him...
I flung myself out of the chair and stalked, stiff legged and sore, over to the fireplace and leaned my head against the mantle.
Let him go! He's the king. You're a soldier. He'll never be yours. Don't lose your heart over him. Don't do it. Not again.
"I'm sorry." Orix came up behind me. "You're exhausted and here I am prating about my needs." He pulled my hand to his mouth and pressed the palm against his lips.

A Little Love - In Too Deep by @AnitaPhilmar #mfrwauthor

In Too Deep –

On the banks of the Trinity River, Sadie Pepperman is looking for a chance to escape the demands of her in-laws. With her husband’s dead, they want her to marry her brother-in-law so they can take control of her farm.
Suddenly, the peace of the day is shattered when her best friend steps too far into the river. Rushing to save her, Sadie meets a handsome stranger that ignites her dormant lust. She sees her friend rescued by a steamship and backs away from Logan Jansen, only to turn her ankle.
The agonizing pain leaves Sadie with the inability to walk. Needing help, she offers Logan a place to stay if he’ll help with the chores on her farm. With his agreement, Sadie adds another problem to her list. Now, not only does she have to worry about how to bring her crops in from the field and run her farm alone but she also has to fight her attraction to Logan.
Can Sadie end her in-laws’ interference in her life,
run her farm alone,
and give love another chance?

Excerpt:

 “Zack, damn it.”
The loud shout caught Sadie by surprise. She scanned the shoreline and spotted a man. Drawing to a stop, she threw on the brake, scouting the river bank.
Two horses grazed nearby. Their saddles, along with other gear, lay discarded in a heap in the middle of a small clearing, as if two people had camped there over night.
A man stood at the edge of the clearing, turning at her approach. Dressed in only a pair of dark cotton pants, he rushed forward. His bright, curly blond hair and his broad shoulders registered briefly with Sadie but with her friend in trouble she didn’t let her sway her from the problem at hand.
“Are you a friend of the woman who is drowning?”
Unable to certain what to say to the stranger, she nodded and worked to clear the lump in her throat. How did this man know about Carolyn?
“Move over. I’ll drive. If we hurry I should be able to save her and my friend.” He placed a foot on the side step of the wagon and crowded onto the bench.
She quickly scooted along the wooden plank, allowing him room to settle beside her. Long fingers closed over the reins and he tugged the leather from her grip.
He didn’t wait for an answer. Lifting the reins, he released the brake.

Book Love to My Friend Lizzie Starr

Blurb

Searching…

Lara Zeroun needs something in her life, so she opens a portal in time and travels to the ancient Highlands. But, how can she become involved with a dark, mysterious man who belongs to another time?

Waiting…

Due to the matriarchal line of inheritance, Iain is no longer able to lay claim to his father's lands. He's prepared to leave--until a golden-haired woman visits the manor on the arm of a wandering storyteller. But, with no land or possessions, Iain dares not succumb to the temptation of Lara.

Finding…

Danger lurks in Iain's time and becomes a threat to Lara's present. Will Lara and Iain be able to defeat the evil and make their ways through time--finding the love they both desire?

Short excerpt:
The heat flared in Iain’s face as though he had been outside too long after a dim, sunless winter. He could not lift his eyes past the hand that looked so small, yet fit so perfectly in his. Was it possible she trembled at his touch?

The need to feel his lips against her honey-gold skin drew his head lower. At the same time his hand lifted until her fingers were a mere inch from his mouth. He tasted her name before touching her skin. “Lara.”

The back of her hand was warm, the gentle kiss the barest brush of lips against her. Reluctance pushed her whispered name past his lips again before he pulled back. “I beg pardon, m’lady.”

Soft and breathless she asked, “For what?”

“I took liberty ‘twas no’ mine to take.”

Lara eased her hand from his and rested it against his cheek. He barely felt the touch of her fingers as she guided his face toward her. The violet swirl of her eyes swallowed him. “What liberty?”

“To kiss ye so.” To desire ye so. “Ye belong to another.”

After days of monitoring this sexy suspect on surveillance cameras, his unquenchable thirst for her forbidden lips and lush, sinful body jeopardizes not only the investigation and his career but his heart.

Egg-cerpt:

Ryan White tried not to stare. He really did. But he was a man, and she was so damn sexy. More importantly, she was in the process of taking off her clothes.

From his desk in the living room, he watched one of three black and white monitors from the surveillance cameras hidden in Paige Knowles place. For two weeks now, he'd been staking out her house. The Bureau didn't consider her the simple owner of a small, online video store. They suspected her of being involved in an internet piracy ring in Phoenix . From what Ryan had seen, he didn't believe it.

But he had to prove her innocence. He'd managed to get the cameras inside her home, but hadn't yet had the time to search for any incriminating evidence. Soon, though, he'd figure out a way.

He took a deep swallow from his beer, but the drink didn't sooth the thirst and anticipation burning through his body.

Eleven-thirty and right on schedule.

In her master bedroom, Paige walked to her bed and unbuttoned her blouse with slow, sure movements, making him wonder how capable those same hands would be on his own body. No doubt, they'd be just as deft as they danced and stroked his flesh. He shifted in the office chair, unable to control the hunger pooling in his groin.

She tossed back her dark hair with a jerk of her chin before shrugging out of the sleeves and dropping the shirt on her bed to reveal a black bra that cupped round, full breasts. Damn, they were a perfect size for his hands.

Next, she pulled off her jeans. The denim slipped over her lush hips and settled to the ground around her ankles. She stepped from them on lean, incredibly long legs that looked strong enough to wrap around his hips and bind him to her.

When she reached around to unhook her bra, Ryan swallowed with difficulty and swiveled his chair away from the desk and the screen. Conscious of her vulnerability, he looked away in a valiant effort to afford her some privacy. Each evening as she got ready for the night, he'd found himself drawn to the screen like some perverted voyeur. Every single time, he gave in to his sickness and savored every tantalizing glimpse of her naked body.

Tonight Ryan lasted a full minute before he caved.

He rolled his chair back around and stared at the monitor.

Oh, shit.

Ryan jerked up in his chair and set his beer on the desk with a loud thump.

Naked. Every glorious inch.

HEART OF STONE is a contemporary romance taking place in the Hill Country of Texas. It is a story of love and betrayal, with elements that will resonate with today’s readers.

Blurb:

A marriage in name only. A secret past. Can love be found amid the tangle of distrust and betrayal?

Alone and pregnant with twins, Amber Wilson has only a fuzzy memory of how she got that way. One thing she knows for sure—no man will ever get near enough to hurt her again. But when she meets Stone Brandon, the attraction is too great to ignore. Stone’s ex-fiancée’s betrayal has hardened his heart. Though he is drawn to Amber, he knows he can never fall in love again. Still, with her help, the dreams he has for the expansion of his family’s ranch can become a reality. A platonic marriage seems like the logical answer for both of them—until he realizes that a marriage in name only with Amber is a hell of his own making.

Excerpt:

Dust billowed behind Amber Wilson’s beat-up Mustang. Gravel pinged against the undercarriage. She refused to let the dismal condition of the Green Monster, as she called her car, get her down today. A new adventure, filled with hope, waited for her at the end of the tree-lined drive.

The open window offered some relief from the sizzling heat of summer in the hill country of Texas. Still, the humidity-laden air lay heavy on her face, clogging pores that struggled to breath and plastering tendrils of curly blonde hair to her moist cheeks.

“Whoa,” she whispered at her first glimpse of the sprawling ranch house. “I didn’t expect anything like this.” Her foot let off on the gas pedal, indecision running rampant through her system.

Even so, the welcome shade of a live oak beckoned. She parked under the spreading branches and turned off the loud grumblings of her car engine. Emitting a groan of her own, she brushed a hand over her rounded belly and hefted her cumbersome body off the ripped seat. The car door grated on its hinges before finally clunking back into place.

“Whew.” The word came out on a sigh when the warm breeze lifted her damp skirt and actually felt cool against her heated skin. The brief spate of relief fled on the coattails of renewed anxiety when she again stared at the house and the surrounding ranch land.

Intimidated, she cranked the side mirror around to check out her reflection. Big mistake. Limp, wet curls stuck to her cheeks and neck. Perspiration left dark patches of smeared mascara under both eyes.

“Lord,” she murmured, licking the tip of her finger and swiping at the smudges. “They’ll think twice about ever hiring someone over the phone again when they open the door and see a short, pregnant raccoon on the porch.” A giggle burst out at the image and she put a hand over her mouth, looking around for listeners.

Amber’s gaze returned to the mirror. She jammed fingers swollen from the heat into her hair, trying to rearrange the shiny mass of tangled ringlets circling her head. Finally deciding the heavy mane tucked behind her ears tamed it best, she turned and climbed the porch steps.

“Well, here we go,” she said on a heavy breath. “Another new chapter in my life.”

Her fingers hesitated around the plain brass knocker on the door. Whether to delay meeting her new employer or just for a breather, she couldn’t say. Glancing over her shoulder, she gnawed her lips uncertainly at the dented heap of car parked in full view.

“Hmmm. Not a great first impression. Maybe I should move the Green Monster out of sight— ”

The door swung open abruptly. With a yelp of surprise, Amber toppled into the house.
Fighting for balance against a center of gravity that was way off kilter with her growing abdomen, she pitched forward. Strong hands caught her under the arms. Her fingers locked on the muscular biceps of the stranger holding her up as she grappled for firm footing.

“What’s this?” a deep, amused voice asked from somewhere above her head.

She cuddled her abdomen with a protective hand, while clinging to the man with the other.
Heart pounding, still reeling from the unexpected tumble, she stared up into the most startling blue eyes she’d ever seen. Time ceased to exist as Amber lost her balance again— this time with a sensation of sinking into the depths of those indigo pools.

Flash from the Past Posts - The Cougar Meets her Master

Title: The Cougar Meets Her Master
Author: KyAnn Waters
Price: $1.99
At The Wilder Roses

Blurb:

Taylor Davis is turning 40. Her high powered job leaves little room for romance outside of her high powered vibrator that sleeps under her pillow. No pillow talk allowed. And no complaints from her. The rabbit never quits before she's done, doesn't complicate her calendar, and Taylor doesn't have to concoct excuses to make it go home after orgasms.
Enter Colt Foster. Has the bitch of the Beau Monde Hotel and Casino met her match? The hot, young detective has his own rules...and expects Taylor to play by them. Can she say no when Colt slaps on the cuffs? Does she want to...will he let her?

Excerpt:

Taylor took long even breaths to keep her knees from shaking. Could she fuck her best friend's nephew? It wasn't as if Colt was an eighteen-year-old high school graduate. Clearly, Rachel had meant collegiate when she mentioned his graduation.

Taylor's position at the hotel made her aggressive, dominant and stole her femininity. When Colt stared into her eyes, all she felt were flutters. Some twisted part of her wanted to see if she could please a man like Colt, a real man that saw her as a woman. Every thing about him screamed sex. Hot, sweaty, curl the toes fucking that would leave her body spent and her mind numb.

Could she say yes? Damn, would he let her say no?

She stood, shook out her hair and sighed. "Let's go." It surprised her that she said the words like it meant absolutely nothing to her that a man at least ten years her junior was about to take her to bed. It was a huge fucking deal. She didn't take men to her suite...to her bed. Rachel had asked her to get him a room...not her bedroom.

Moisture damped her panties, and her nipples were painfully tight. She'd noticed the way he stared in the gym. Definitely a breast man.

She crossed the lobby with Colt towering beside her. Tall, cut and devastatingly handsome, how stupid could she be? Of course, she was going to fuck him.

The elevator doors opened. Colt stepped in behind her. As soon as the doors closed, his hand snaked out and wrapped around her wrist. He hauled her against his chiseled chest.

"Not here," she whispered. "This is a casino. You're watched everywhere except the privacy of your room. I'm not letting my staff see me groped in an elevator." She ran her hands over his sculpted pectorals.

He angled her body closer to his. "They can't see you grope me." He covered her hand and drew it down his torso, over his rippled abs to cup the swollen length of his erection behind the fly of his jeans.

Her trembling fingers gripped his bulge and measured the thickness. The elevator doors opened, and a couple stepped in with them. Taylor spun around, facing the doors, and smiled. "Good evening."

The older gentleman nodded his head, stood next to his companion and faced the doors. Shit, doesn't Colt listen? He moved behind her and fit the persistent, engorged weapon contained in his jeans into the crack of her ass. With subtle movements, he ground against her.

She couldn't help arching her back. Reckless. Wanton. Wild. Heat radiated off Colt and blazed through the thin fabric of her clothing. She wanted him feeling as out of control as she was, only he didn't seem to care that they were in a public place. In fact, the moan that just tickled her ear made the gentleman glance over his shoulder at them. She smiled.

Hell, Lady Luck had to be a woman because she understood the magnetic attraction of formidable men. The elevator stopped on the twentieth floor.

"Excuse us." Colt propelled her out of the elevator.

Her hearty laugh echoed in the corridor. "I hope not everything about you is this rushed."
