My Special Guest - Tina Gayle


Okay, Tina, let's first talk about the setting for your book.

Sure thing, set in Denton, Texas. It's spring which is my favorite time of year. The days are warming up and the nights are a little cool.

Why Texas?

I grow up in Texas and went for a time to the University of North Texas which is in Denton. Love the area and wanted to create a story there. Linda's son is attending the university.

What makes Texas unique?

Now this question could take all day to answer. I love the cowboys, though Vaughn is not a cowboy, but his father is the classic Texan. Vaughn is a nerd living in a world that he enjoys but one his family doesn't understand.

Vaughn, however, drives a truck and enjoys the land. He is in my way of thinking a new age cowboy.

Okay this week, I've been blogging about Goal, Motivation and Conflict. Tell us about Linda's? 


She's a widow, who is just beginning to get back into the dating game. Her life has completely changed. She no longer has young children or a husband. For the first time in her life, she is free to do what she wants.

Her goal is to have some fun.
Her motivation is to let go of the past and explore a new future for herself.
Her conflict is that she is falling back into old patterns and is worried about making the same mistakes again.

We all have goals we want to achieve. The same is true of the characters we read about. If those goals match our readers then it's another element to draw them into the story.

Remember - the goal, the motivation and the conflict in which a character faces are the three elements every story should have.

Mother of Computers. (FFP)

Thursdays is my flash from my past posts.

Grace Hopper may not have the beauty of Audrey Hepburn, but she is a woman who revealutionized the computer world.

Born in New York, NY on December 9, 1906,

Grace Brewster Murray graduated from Vassar and Yale. She worked as an educator at Vassar until 1943.

After resigning her post with Vassar, she joined the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service). Assigned to the Bureau of Ordnance Computation Project at Harvard University, she was the third person to be assigned to the research group.

With the need to understand computer language, she jumped right in and started learning how to program the computer. She also wrote a manual to outline the fundamental operating principles of computing machines.

With no children and her marriaged over, Grace devoted herself to work and held down several jobs in the military, private industry and academe.

She held the title of Admiral Hopper and was one of the first software engineers in the computing world.

A credit to women everywhere, she was most proud of her service to her country. She died in January 7, 1992 and is buried in Arlington.

Special Guest - Natasha Blackthorne

Seeing as I'm discussing scenery this month, I asked Natasha to tell about the place where her story takes place. 


Here's what she had to say.

The inspiration for Grey’s Lady came after I had read deeply about the era. Philadelphia in this time is the Athens of America. It is a city filled with beautiful houses hidden behind garden walls and bricked sidewalks lined with shade trees. It is also a city known for its elegant ladies. It is a sophisticated city, very different in mood from the commercial New York City and the still quite Puritan Boston.

At the same time, the New England merchants and their world appealed to me. I was fascinated by the stories of the men who earned their fortunes at sea privateering and then spawned the legacies that would create our rising national commerce.

I read another book on the hidden world of Philadelphia and the sexual power exchange between men and women. A very unique world, different from what is often thought of in this time in the United States. A world where upper class gentlemen took mistresses from among the lower classes. A secret world of clandestine meetings in disorderly houses and inns and bedchambers when husbands were away.

So the idea came to me, through the character of Grey, to have one of these staid, business-minded merchants from the north come and fall in love with one of these beautiful, beguiling women from the lower class in Philadelphia. And through Grey, I saw Beth. I saw first that moment in the booksellers when he first saw her. I saw how she boldly approached him and how it made him react.

And then little by little I saw why she did what she did. My story began to develop with an unconventional, seductive heroine and a different sort of Cinderella story at its core. I enjoy the themes of self-protection, surrender and rescue and I enjoyed exploring them in this story. As often is asked in these types of stories, who really rescues who?

The sequel to Grey’s Lady is titled White Lace and Promises and is scheduled for release Dec 26, 2011.

I have always been a daydreamer who told myself stories of love and romance set in other times and places for my own pleasure. Eventually my story worlds became so real, they demanded to be brought out of my imagination and onto the page. It gives me great joy to finally share them with you. I hope you enjoy my story world.

I am married to my own hero and we share our life with a very quirky calico cat. I hold a BA in History and I especially enjoy studying social history and biography and this is where most of my story ideas come from. I like to know my characters from the bones outward, the air they breathe, the food they eat, the thoughts and social movements and morals that were influencing them in their times.

I also enjoy reading psychology and sociology and literature. I enjoy music from many different genres.  

I write emotional, evocative, Erotic Historical Romance from the Georgian and Regency Eras, set in both England and America. Whether they are bold or shy, my heroines' strong desires and deep emotions drive the plot—and drive their heroes to the point of no return.

1) Do you believe in love at first sight?

Not so much love as attraction – or maybe even intrigue. I think when we first see or speak to someone and we get that loop the loop in the belly, or pinch of heat at our cheeks, you can guarantee it’s because of something they’ve said that we like, or something they’ve done we agree with or they’ve looked at us in a way that makes us feel a million dollars!

Those are the things that set the sparks a-flying!

2) What was the best advice you were given about writing or life?

I’ll answer both!!

Writing – Give yourself permission to write a ‘crappy’ first draft.

Life – Rather than advice, it’s a quote that I try to remember and live my life with the words in mind:

“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel” – Maya Angelou.

3) Do you celebrate when each book is published?

Absolutely!! It usually involves lots and lots of blogging in the day and then lots and lots of wine in the evening, lol! ; )

4) What are you currently working on?

My next novella which is about a British heroine starting a new life in Greece – here’s the blurb:

Michelle Hutton leaves everything behind and flies from the UK to Greece in search of a new beginning. Her first encounter is with a sexy, pro-bono lawyer with a body that could adorn the cover of Playgirl. When they talk, he tells her his sister has a restaurant that desperately needs a new chef.
