The Challenge by @KimHeadlee #romance #fantasy

The gauntlet is thrown. One must die. Refusal is not an option.

Arthur the High King of Breatein has fallen captive of a longtime enemy, the Saxon warrior-princess Camilla, who lusts to avenge the death of her betrothed at Gyan’s hands and will stop at nothing, even the black arts, to achieve her goal. Because Gyan and Arthur have grown estranged, she fears that Arthur may side with Camilla and make her his new queen.

To meet Camilla’s challenge, Gyan must face all her demons—public as well as private.

Liberty with a #HolidayRecipe both by @KimHeadlee

Wanted to Gear Up for this Years #HolidayRecipe Exchange and repost a few from 2014

Jam-filled Crescent Rolls  Ingredients:
  • 1 tube of pre-cut crescent roll dough
  • Your favorite jam(s)
  • Melted butter (optional)

Instructions:
  • Preheat oven as directed on the package for the type of baking sheet or pan you plan to use.
  • Open tube and unroll each triangle.
  • Spread a small amount of jam across the base of the triangle, no more than halfway toward the point. This is the tricky part, because the jam can ooze out and burn during baking.
  • Roll the triangle loosely and place on baking sheet.
  • Brush with a little melted butter (optional).
  • Repeat for the remaining triangles, leaving at least 2 inches between crescents.
  • Bake as directed on the package, and do not over-bake!
  • Cool before serving. The jam can get very hot.

SYNOPSIS
They hailed her “Liberty,” but she was free only to obey—or die.

Betrayed by her father and sold as payment of a Roman tax debt to fight in Londinium’s arena, gladiatrix-slave Rhyddes feels like a wild beast in a gilded cage. Celtic warrior blood flows in her veins, but Roman masters own her body. She clings to her vow that no man shall claim her soul, though Marcus Calpurnius Aquila, son of the Roman governor, makes her yearn for a love she believes impossible.

Groomed to follow in his father’s footsteps and trapped in a politically advantageous betrothal, Aquila prefers the purity of combat on the amphitheater sands to the sinister intrigues of imperial politics, and the raw power and athletic grace of the flame-haired Libertas to the adoring deference of Rome’s noblewomen.

When a plot to overthrow Caesar ensnares them as pawns in the dark design, Aquila must choose between the Celtic slave who has won his heart and the empire to which they both owe allegiance. Trusting no man and knowing the opposite of obedience is death, the only liberty offered to any slave, Rhyddes must embrace her arena name—and the love of a man willing to sacrifice everything to forge a future with her.

EXCERPT

The warrior-woman looked heavier by at least two stone, but Rhyddes pinned her chest with her knee. She dropped the pitchfork and grasped her dagger, yanking it free. Grabbing a fistful of limed hair, she wrestled the woman’s head to one side to expose her neck.
The Pict bucked and twisted, trying to break Rhyddes’s grip. ’Twas not much different than wrestling a fever-mad calf.
Rhyddes’s deft slice ended the threat.
Blood spurted from the woman’s neck in sickening pulses.
Rhyddes stood, panting, her stomach churning with the magnitude of what she’d done. ’Twas no suffering animal she’d killed—and it could have been her lying there, pumping her lifeblood into the mud.
Bile seared her throat, making her gag. Pain lanced her stomach. Bent double, she retched out the remains of her morning meal, spattering the corpse.
After spitting out the last bitter mouthful and wiping her lips with the back of her hand, she drew a deep breath and straightened. As she turned a slow circle, her senses taking in the sights and sounds and stench of the devastation surrounding her, she wished she had not prevailed.
The news grew worse as she sprinted toward the lodge.
Of her seven brothers, the Picts had left Ian and Gwydion dead, her father and Owen wounded, the lodge and three outbuildings torched. She ran a fingertip over the crusted blood of her scratch, and she couldn’t suppress a surge of guilt.
Mayhap, she thought through the blinding tears as she ran to help what was left of her family, ’twould have been better had she died in the Pict’s stead.
The surviving raiders were galloping toward the tree line with half the cattle. The remaining stock lay stiffening in the fields, already attracting carrion birds.
Three days later, the disaster attracted scavengers of an altogether different sort.

With a shudder Gyan recalled the rumor that Camilla had enlisted demonic aid…
She banished those thoughts, and their attendant fears, by pondering the irony that Camilla had tried to strike at her through Arthur. It might have worked, once. The passion that had colored the early years of their marriage was still celebrated in song throughout Breatein and Caledon.
These days, she wasn’t singing.

BOOK BLURB / SYNOPSIS –

Sir Robert Alain de Bellencombre has been granted what every man wants: a rich English estate in exchange for his valiant service at the Battle of Hastings. To claim this reward, the Norman knight must wed the estate's Saxon heiress. Most men would leap at such an opportunity, but for Alain, who broke his vow to his dying mother by failing to protect his youngest brother in battle, it means facing more easily broken vows. But when rumors of rampant thievery, dangerous beasts, and sorcery plaguing a neighboring estate reach his ears, nothing will make him shirk duty to king and country when people's lives stand at risk. He assumes the guise of a squire to scout the land, its problems, and its lady.
Lady Kendra of Edgarburh has been granted what no woman wants: a forced marriage to an enemy who may be kith or kin to the man who murdered her beloved brother. Compounding her anguish is her failure to awaken the miraculous healing gift bequeathed by their late mother in time to save his life. Although with his dying breath, he made her promise to seek happiness above all, Kendra vows that she shall find neither comfort nor love in the arms of a Norman…unless it snows in July.
Alain is smitten by Lady Kendra from the first moment of their meeting; Kendra feels the forbidden allure of the handsome and courtly Norman "squire." But a growing evil overshadows everyone, invoking dark forces and ensnaring Kendra in a plot to overthrow the king Alain is oath-bound to serve. Kendra and Alain face a battle unlike any other as their honor, their love, their lives, and even their very souls lie in the balance.

EXCERPT

FIFTEEN THOUSAND MEN and horses writhed across the valley below, appearing as toys in a children’s game.
Many might consider war a game, but Sir Robert Alain de Bellencombre, knight of Normandy bound to the service of Duke William and commander of a unit in the cavalry reserves, did not number among their ranks.
Edward the Confessor, King of England via his Saxon father but Norman by his mother, was dead. This battle, raging near the coastal hamlet called Hastings, would decide the right of one man to wear the English crown: William the Norman, acknowledged by Pope Alexander to be Edward’s lawful successor; or Harold the Saxon, brother of Edward’s wife, the man alleged to be Edward’s deathbed choice.
Stroking his war horse’s glossy charcoal neck to calm her, Alain pondered Harold’s claim. It had to be true. This many men would not sacrifice their lives for a lie. Yet the vast majority of Harold’s supporters were Saxons harboring no wish to bear the Norman yoke. Perhaps such men might be desperate enough to fight for a lie that promised to restore Saxon rule.
A trumpet blared. He signaled his men forward, couched his lance, and spurred Chou to send her careening into the melee.
Harold’s shield wall, which had seemed impregnable, began to crumble under the onslaught of Alain’s unit, hastened by the desertion of men who no doubt decided they weren’t quite so willing to die. Their lord stood exposed just long enough for a Norman archer to sight his mark. Harold fell, screaming and clutching an arrow that protruded from one eye.
Harold’s supporters closed ranks around him, blocking Alain’s view and giving him more than enough to do as the Saxons redoubled their efforts to guard their lord’s body.
A familiar whirl of colors caught Alain’s attention. The saffron leopard prowling on a green field—Étienne! A Saxon knight, with a blue arm and fist blazing defiance across his gray shield, bore down upon Étienne with leveled lance. Étienne tumbled from his horse. He scrambled to his feet and retrieved his sword, putting it to good use on the Saxons surrounding him, although the knight who’d unhorsed him had already ridden in search of other targets.
Lance long since discarded and sword now rising and falling with fatal precision, Alain surged to reach his brother’s side. Protection of her youngest son had been their dying mother’s wish, and he had sworn on his own life to keep Étienne safe.
Before he could close the distance, another Saxon knight fought past Étienne’s guard to thrust a war-knife into his throat. Through the visor the knight’s eyes gleamed with startling, fathomless malice. Alain could only watch in stunned disbelief as he laid his hand upon Étienne’s chest for a few moments. Uttering a soul-freezing howl, the Saxon yanked out his seax and disappeared into the press with Étienne’s shield, denying Alain vengeance.
Shame and grief rent his heart asunder.
He had failed the two he loved most; failed them so utterly that he could never beg their forgiveness in this lifetime.
Pain slammed into his shoulder, toppling him from the saddle. Étienne’s body broke his fall. He tried to roll clear, but a spear through his chest pinned him to Étienne. His gut convulsed, and bile burned his throat. Blinding agony killed his struggle to free himself. Death’s stench invaded his nostrils.
He closed his eyes and waited for his final journey to begin.

Flower and Sunshine - Why I Love Spring by @KimHeadlee #SpringFlingRomance #Excerpt

Why I love spring
by Kim Headlee

When God created the world, He had to make it functional, of course. He didn't have to make it beautiful, and yet He did. The dancing bands of the aurora's display, the giggle of a child, the caress of silk on the skin, the first whiff of coffee and bacon in the morning... but never is that beauty more evident than in the sights and sounds and smells of the season of rebirth and hope. It is my hope that you enjoy all these sensory delights as much as I do!

Spring flowers play a major role in God's rebirth process, of course. My paranormal historical romance Snow in July presents a rebirth metaphor, often using flowers too: a rebirth from the winter of angst, grief, fear, and hatred into the spring of acceptance, compassion, forgiveness, and love.

Most men would leap at such an opportunity, but for Alain, who broke his vow to his dying mother by failing to protect his youngest brother in battle, it means facing more easily broken vows.

In the following excerpt, Kendra, alone with the badly wounded and unconscious Alain, confronts her fear of her inherited paranormal healing gift, the activation of which is catalyzed by touching dried Christmas blooms from the Glastonbury thorn tree. That fear is born from the failure on her previous attempt to use the flowers to save her dying mother, several years earlier. The petals had ignited in her hands, causing a lurid rash whose scar has left a permanent reminder of her failure and anguish.

EXCERPT

As she reached for the packet again, fear froze her hand.

The Glastonbury thorn’s Cristes-mæsse flowers were reputed to work miracles for the pure of heart. Yet how could she be “pure of heart” when she harbored venomous hatred for the man who had murdered her brother? How could she look her Norman bridegroom in the eye and proclaim her fidelity to him while she felt herself succumbing to this squire’s forbidden allure? How could she reconcile the months of despising England’s new king for what he had done to her people, her family, and her very existence?

“I can’t!” Sobbing, she buried her face in her hands. “I just can’t. The thorn won’t work for me. I am not worthy.”

Power does not come without sacrifice. But for Alain’s sake, and yours, you must endure the thorn.

For Alain’s sake.

Raising her head and drying her face on the sleeve of her gown, she gazed at the man—the Norman—who’d already sacrificed God alone knew how much for her sake. His chilled, waxy face convinced her that whether she was betrothed to another man or not, and whether Alain was kin to Del’s murderer or not, she didn’t want him to pay the ultimate price.

She had no right to permit him to make such a sacrifice.

The very least she could do for him was sacrifice a small piece of herself.

She drew a deep, shuddering breath, released her hatred as best she could, and pressed the packet between her palms.

Author's Note: Cristes-mæsse is the ancient Saxon word for Christmas

Morgan le Fay, 6th-century Queen of Gore and the only major character not killed off by Mark Twain in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, vows revenge upon the Yankee Hank Morgan. She casts a spell to take her to 1879 Connecticut so she may waylay Sir Boss before he can travel back in time to destroy her world. But the spell misses by 300 miles and 200 years, landing her in the Washington, D.C., of 2079, replete with flying limousines, hovering office buildings, virtual-reality television, and sundry other technological marvels.

Whatever is a time-displaced queen of magic and minions to do? Why, rebuild her kingdom, of course—two kingdoms, in fact: as Campaign Boss for the reelection of American President Malory Beckham Hinton, and as owner of the London Knights world-champion baseball franchise.

Written as though by the old master himself, King Arthur’s Sister in Washington’s Court by Mark Twain as channeled by Kim Iverson Headlee offers laughs, love, and a candid look at American society, popular culture, politics, baseball...and the human heart.

QUEEN MORGAN
It does so satisfy my soul to own some Knights once again.

CLARICE
Care to share how much it cost?

QUEEN MORGAN
Evil wench! Have you not enough work searching for another man I might hire as general manager? The team trustees hired the last one, and I do not trust them to avoid making another mistake. The MLB will release the sale details soon enough. Let us say it was a mountain of treasure.
Queen Morgan holds up an exquisite form-flattering scarlet
gown, trimmed in black.

CLARICE
Knights’ colors; of course that one must go with you.
Queen Morgan places gown in suitcase.

QUEEN MORGAN
I shall miss you, Clarice. Yet you shall oversee my DC office well.  I have seen it.

CLARICE
I’ll look out for the President for you, I promise.

QUEEN MORGAN
I appreciate that. President Malory has become as a sister to me...
Queen Morgan holds up another dress, a sexy little black one.

CLARICE
Please tell me about him.

QUEEN MORGAN
Excuse me?

CLARICE
I think about someone now and then, too-- David, the man who didn’t return from the mission to extract your brother. He never knew how I felt about him.

QUEEN MORGAN
The monk you mentioned the day we met... I am sorry. My lover’s name is-- was Sir Accolon.
Queen Morgan paces, drawing the dress through her fingers.

QUEEN MORGAN (CONT’D)
Sir Launcelot and Sir Gawaine-- and King Arthur-- were the only knights ever to best him in single combat. Accolon was big and strong, yet as a lover he was as tender as any virgin maid could ever wish. His intellect rivaled mine, as did his eagerness to help right the wrongs Arthur inflicted upon me.
Queen Morgan presses dress over her heart and keeps pacing.

QUEEN MORGAN (CONT’D)
Accolon’s hair was as glossy-black
as a raven's wing, and he kept it
short-cropped in the old Roman style.
It had a most endearing curl. His
eyes were a fathomless shade of
blue...
She halts in front of her monitor, tuned to a video montage
of SANDY CARTER, 40s, a baseball player/scout/coach/manager.

QUEEN MORGAN (CONT’D)
Lord God and all His angels in Heaven! Who is that? And if you say Accolon, I shall blast you into
next week.

CLARICE
And make it stick. Yes, ma’am.  (facing monitor)
Alexander Leroy “Sandy” Carter, second baseman and 2057 World Series MVP for the Yankees. He
retired his glove in '65 and spent the next several years as a Yankee scout and coach. The Red Sox hired him as a triple-A manager in '72.
Clarice directs full attention toward Queen Morgan.

CLARICE (CONT’D)
He’s managing their big club now.

QUEEN MORGAN
If this man is so valuable, why did Ira Desmorel let him go, and to none other than the Yankees’ most
ancient and hated of rivals? Or was the move Mr. Carter’s idea?
Video clip shows Sandy getting into a dugout brawl with a fellow YANKEE COACH. Clip rolls, showing more fights, including boardrooms and bars, during dialog.

CLARICE
His points are valid. He just doesn’t bother to curb his temper.

QUEEN MORGAN
So it was with Accolon...(appreciative whistle) Even today Alexander Carter has a--how do you say it in this century? Nice abs?

CLARICE: (grins) Those, too.

QUEEN MORGAN:  But he is not available.

CLARICE:
For the right price, Queen Morgan, anyone is.

QUEEN MORGAN:  Of course. That never changes.

Queen Morgan twitches her hand to don the sexy black dress. She touches a computer key to open a chat window, and she strikes a sultry pose. Connection opens to show Sandy in his Boston Red Sox office.

SANDY (V.O.): Carter. May I help--

QUEEN MORGAN:  Me? Why, yes, Mr. Carter. Indeed you may. In ever so many ways.
