Writing Tips

For the month of August, I thought we would look at some tips that can help us become better writers.

Some people feel if you write erotica that you are not a "true" writer. But believe me, I use everything I've learn to write my books and I'm constantly looking for ways to become a better author.

So even if you don't write, join me this month and check out some of the things an author needs to know to write a better book.

Music - That One Song

I have to say that my husband and I didn't start out with song that we considered "our song" but over the years we have found a few that bring back special memories.

"I love you,
you love me,
we're a perfect family,
with a great big hug..."

Okay so it's the Barney song, but it does make us laugh, and oh the memories...

Enjoy the good times and the bad with a special song.

Guest Today - Glee Montrose written by Patricia Green

First, let's learn a little about Ms. Montrose story.

Glee Elizabeth Montrose is an eccentric heiress with an entourage consisting of two eunuchs and a mute maid. A confirmed "bachelor," she's traveling across the US to escape Boston's restrictive culture and an unpleasant reunion with the Sultan of Constantinople. Her goal is to reach her inherited rancho in California where she can finish writing her father's final book manuscript in peace.

Esteban Garcia is an alleged murderer being dragged across the US by a drunken bounty-hunter/trail guide. Garcia insists that he is a victim of mistaken identity and is Alejandro Pacheco, owner of a rancho in northern California.

Attracted as she is to Esteban/Alejandro, Glee remains unsure whether to believe him or not. Is he a despicable murderer and thief?

Now for the Interview -

Have you ever found a heroine or hero so fascinating that you'd like to sit down and have a conversation with her or him? What questions would you ask? Recently, I gave this some thought and decided to write a little interview with the heroine of UNDER WRAPS, my historical romance novel. Her name is Glee Montrose, and she's a little…well…eccentric.

PG: Good morning, Miss Montrose. I understand you recently visited Constantinople? How did you like it?
GM: Please call me Glee. Yes, I spent two years in a harem there. I wasn't a concubine, you understand, but a guest. It was quite exotic and educational. The women were fascinating and the culture very different from the United States, or anywhere else I've visited, for that matter.

PG: Now you're in Boston. You brought a few things back with you, didn't you?
GM: Yes. I was given some truly beautiful garments while I was there. Hardly proper for society here, unfortunately. Though there was the Soutraine's ball recently, and I wore one of the harem outfits there. What a fiasco! Anyway, I also came back with two more servants: eunuchs. They were gifts from the Sultan of Constantinople. People here look at them strangely, but they're part of my retinue now and I am comfortable with them.

PG: You also have a maid, don't you? An African woman?
GM: Amina is her name. She's mute, but we communicate through sign. She's incredibly clever and loyal. I can't imagine life without her nearby.

PG: You aren't planning on staying in Boston, are you?
GM: Well, I was, but it looks like my Uncle has other, less appealing plans for me, so I've decided to leave Boston in order to find the freedom I need to finish writing my father's last book.

PG: Where are you going?
GM: Monterey, California.

PG: That's a long way away. How do you plan to get there? You know, the cross-continental railroad is far from complete.
GM: I'll travel by wagon. It's a long journey, but necessary.

PG: So you'll sign on with a wagon train—
GM: No! Actually, I'm hiring a guide. He's a little…unconventional, but then so am I.

PG: So it'll be your retinue and this guide?
GM: The guide is a bounty hunter. He is transporting a criminal on the journey as well. I'm not happy with the situation, but I don't have time to find another guide.

PG: Is the criminal a danger to you?
GM: Possibly. But, he's got his charms as well. It's a little upsetting to find him attractive, since he's accused of murder and theft. But I'm in complete control of myself. Really, I am.

PG: It sounds like the journey will be somewhat uncomfortable for you, Glee. I know you have to get ready to go, so we'll close here. My advice to you is to stay away from that prisoner.
GM: I'm rather terrible at following advice. Thank you for having me.

Now let's meet the author of Under Wraps

Having begun her writing career at the tender age of seven by publishing a poem in a children's magazine, Ms. Green has spent many years at typewriter and keyboard. She's the author of 8 published projects (7 ebooks; and one out-of-print traditional book).

She is a member of EPIC, the Erotic Authors Association, and the Erotica Readers and Writers Association.

Ms. Green resides in the Washington DC area, is married to her best friend, and is the mother of twin daughters.

More about her book with an excerpt.

Glee tried to compose herself before entering the parlor. She knew Aunt Ulalie would be aghast at her appearance; she always was. Her Aunt would also be quite taken aback by the two eunuchs. Glee thought she had planned for that, at least, during the six weeks it took to reach Boston from Constantinople. The worst confrontation would be over her Aunt's disapproval of Glee's plan to find a suitable lodging of her own and closet herself away to finish her father's book.

Perhaps that bit of knowledge could wait a week or two, until she settled in. It had been two years, she reminded herself. And the last visit was so brief that she had barely caught her breath. "Coward," she chided herself softly.

Her slightly pointed chin tilted up, she straightened her shoulders as she opened the parlor doors.

Thanks for allowing me to guest on Sexy Lady!

I thought I’d talk about Brainstorm’s “sexy lady”. Her name is Sunny McMaster, and she’s a gentle, athletic and intelligent woman, a mother of a young daughter and a devoted wife. But she’s thrown into an incredible situation, where she has to leave the mother/wife behind and fight to find and save her husband Daniel McMaster. It’s completely against her nature—a different world than she’s ever been exposed to.

She must join a military mission to save thousands of lives in order to find her long missing mate. She’s the key to the success of this super-secret action—without her, the mission will fail and her husband will be lost forever—actually, they’ll all me killed.

She has an old friend among the rescuers, Major “Jax” Jackson, who was also best man at her wedding and Daniel’s best friend. Jax must push her past her limits, physically and emotionally in order for success. Her endurance is tested at an incredible level, and she must put herself at risk in ways she’s never imagined.

But will she make it? Will she endure? When Jax gets the word that she’s been killed, he’s devastated. Will he be able to continue, even though Sunny is the only one who can save Daniel, and in turn, thousands of citizens in the small mountain town of Gold Rush?

Read Brainstorm and find out. The eBook is on sale during this blog tour for only $.99. Follow the links from my website, or go directly to Amazon.com or Smashwords.com to buy or sample.

In Brainstorm, Gold Rush seems to be just another sleepy little Colorado community full of friendly, caring citizens, quaint cottages, and a sort of quiet peace, held gently by the picturesque mountains that surround it. However, something isn't right in Gold Rush, and early on a Monday morning Robert Weller awakens with a cautioning and insuppressible voice inside his head. He soon finds a secret behind every door, a motive with every glance, and a lie beneath every spoken word.

After meeting a strange but beautiful woman named Sunny who insists they were once lovers, people begin dropping dead around him and his world twists upside down as paramilitary teams hunt him, and his own wife and friends turn against him. Weller is thrown into the middle of a military mission to rescue thousands of the town's citizens from a plot to destroy the Free World.

Time is running out: Weller, Sunny and thousands of innocent citizens are facing nuclear devastation. Major “Jax” Jackson and a U.S. Air Force Para Rescue team are their only hope—but how can Jax and his PJs save them all, armed only with nonlethal weapons?

“...as exciting and fast-paced as a thrill ride on a dive bomber, a maelstrom of action, violence, murder and mayhem, way too much fun to put down...based on an actual black CIA program known as ‘Project Stargate. Kessler...really knows his stuff. An outstanding novel.”— Douglas Preston, bestselling author of The Codex, Relic and Book of the Dead and many more.

"...a wild ride into the reality of human consciousness...a kickass adventure story that will have you thrumming through the pages well into the night...handled with stunning effect."— James Rollins, bestselling author of Black Order, Sandstorm and Map of Bones as well as many others.

Excerpt:

“He left you behind to die, like he did several thousand other folks. You don’t have anything to fear from me. You probably passed my little group in the stairwell. We just want to get out of here, just like you.”

Again they eyed each other. This time one of them said, “I told you. I told you they were going to blow this place.”

“Shut up,” said one of the guards in the middle. I figured he must be in charge.

“Come on, Top,” the first guy said. “We don’t have much time.”

“All right,” the leader said. “But we’re going to kill this ass, first.” He raised his gun, and I felt like I’d run out of options. They all wore the copper-lined helmets—my psychic gift would be useless.

I yelled out to my zombies in a bottom-of-the-barrel attempt, “Get them.”

The few of my night-shirted morons that I could see standing on the other side of the stairwell doorway window stood motionless, but it bought me a second as “Top” glanced back toward my group of blanks.

His head cocked and he grinned. He turned back to me, his rifle barrel aimed at my chest.

* * *

Fast forward, Harvey says.

And I go into future mode.

The world is in slow motion. Although my thoughts shift to high gear, I cannot move faster than my adversaries. But I see their movements in advance and know when they will make them.

As the gunman squeezes the trigger, I lurch to one side. Two bullets exit the muzzle of his gun, spinning out with smoke and nitrate debris. My body edges to the side, feeling as cumbersome as a huge aircraft carrier, and the tiny missiles, like torpedoes in the water, come at me. The first will clearly miss. The second bullet becomes a tremendous concern, for I see its green tip and know that the leader’s weapon is loaded with armor-piercing rounds. Guessing what I now wore was likely the latest generation of armor, it still wouldn’t guarantee against penetration from a zippy little 5.56 X 45 mm round at close range, let alone armor piercing. Ten feet away, I twist my torso, a fast jerk in real time, a snail’s crawl in my fast-forward vision. And the projectile zips to me, my side twisting back mere centimeters to avoid it, and it strikes me. The bullet enters the body armor, and although the blood is yet to flow, the blazing pain yet to be felt, I know that it has found flesh.

Hoping it has not ruptured a vital organ, I continue the twisting into a spin, getting out of my assailant’s aim, then leaping toward the initial gunman.

The entire group begins to bring their guns to bear on me.

You are Unique

And so are the people you love. She is not like every other woman. He is not the same guy who is married to your best friend. Treat your love ones like they are special and they will love you for it.

Do they enjoy some special type of sport? Why not try it or at least find out more about it? Maybe, even throw a party the next time it's on tv.

Even if it's not your thing, you can still try to understand their interest in the game or in their hobby.

Be Creative

Romance doesn't have to be all work. Instead, let it be about a state of mind. What you are thinking about, how you are acting, a wink, a smile, a small gift.

My Guest Lizzie Starr

Thank you Lizzie for stopping by. Why don't you tell us a little about "By Keltic Design?"

Here is the blurb:

Allyn Keely, Celtic artist and friend of Faerie, finally finds a man she can love. But she’s older than he is and faces the insurmountable task of helping him realize his destiny in the Otherworld.

Successful businessman, Jaye Zeroun prides himself on his realistic, but lonely, view of life. Until Allyn knots her way around his heart and fills his life with a fantasy he refuses to believe. Then danger threatens their love, forcing him to either accept a deadly battle or lose the very things he never included in his life, a family and a love beyond his wildest imagining.

Excerpt:

Jaye leaned forward eagerly. “Do you ever use coupons?

“Well, sometimes.” She giggled. “When I remember I have them.”

“Okay. Now, if you were a store,” Jaye lifted a hand to stop the comments obviously hovering on Allyn’s lips. “Just play along with me here. If you were a store, would you accept coupons?”

Allyn shrugged. “Oh. I suppose so.”

“Good.” Jaye picked up the scrap of paper and held it in both hands. “Here is a coupon. I would like to redeem it.”

Allyn looked at him, rolled her eyes and tentatively reached out her hand. Taking the slightly crumpled coupon, she pursed her lips and blew out a long, slow breath. Jaye shivered.

Cautious, Allyn looked down at the paper in her hand. Once again her tinkling laughter flowed through the large lobby, knotting and twining itself around Jaye’s heart. “A bedtime story?”

Before he could answer, Jaye had to pause and catch his breath. His hand trembled slightly and he fought to control the tremor. Allyn lay the coupon on her knee and smoothed the wrinkled paper.

“One of my foster moms used to read or tell me stories to help me go to sleep. Just imagining it didn’t work. Maybe a real story will. I’ll bet you know lots of stories.”

“Where did you get this?”

“I found it last night.”

“Yeah. Right.” She leaned forward to hand the coupon back to him.

“Really. Please, won’t you accept my coupon? Help me out.”

Allyn looked deeply into Jaye’s eyes and he wondered if she was searching for his soul. Something inside opened to her willingly. Surprise touched her eyes before she blinked and sat back. Glancing again at the coupon, she took a few moments to fold it carefully and put it into her skirt pocket. “This isn’t a very good place for a bedtime story.”

“You’ll do it?” Jaye jumped to his feet.

“Yes. To help out a friend.” Allyn smiled up at him, took the hand he offered and let him pull her out of the chair. “You need to be in a familiar space. I suppose your room would be the best.”

Jaye eagerly pulled her toward the elevator. Abruptly, he stopped, turned to her and rested his hands on her shoulders. It was difficult to resist the urge to knead them gently. “I have no ulterior motives, Allyn. I really just need some sleep.”

Reaching up, she patted one of his hands. “I wouldn’t agree if I thought otherwise.”

Sexy Lingerie

Now, some might argue that this can be an expensive endeaver. But it doesn't have to be.

If it makes you feel sexy then it's fair game - like wearing your boyfriend's t-shirt without any thing else on.

A silk scarf -- rubbed in the right place it can also add a tittalating spark to the fun.

Release your imagination and find lots of different materials to play with.

Have a great day and explore your adventurous spirit,
