Circles Interlocked – Second Chance Romance by Daryl Devore

Not everyone gets a second chance. Can Julie and Robert get past their past and have a future?

Blurb

How do people get into the situations they find themselves in?

Having been betrayed by the man she assumed she was destined to be with forever; Julie Anderson is heartbroken that her love affair didn't end with the fairy tale Happily Ever After. She leaves town to pursue her dream of being a dancer only to find herself trapped in a job she no longer loves, confined in a relationship with a loveless man, and living day by day regretting what she has become.

Bouncing from failed relationship to failed relationship, Robert Holiday consoles himself with the lie that he sacrificed his happiness so Julie could live her dream.

As fate has a curious sense of humour, eight years later, they wake up in bed together. Now it is up to love to fix what time cannot mend.

 Excerpt 2 – a tiny bit warmer

A smile broke across Robert's face as he turned. Julie's silhouette was illuminated by the light in the bathroom. They crossed the room from opposite sides and climbed on the bed. He slid his hand up her bare back and kissed the end of her nose. "The dance studio," he said.

"Yes, what about it?"

"No, that's its name, The Dance Studio. That's what you've been calling it."

"The Dance Studio." Julie smiled. "I like it. Now shut up and make love to me."

"Yes ma'am."

In the faint moonlight, Julie could see Robert's dark eyes had turned from exhaustion to lust.

He wanted to finish what'd been interrupted in the barn. He lowered his face to her lips, savouring the sensations that electrified his body. His kiss was soft as it grazed her skin, just enough pressure to tease - to make her desire more.

She trickled the tips of her fingers up his back. Her hand paused. Memories flooded her mind; laughing in class, kissing, eating supper together and being wrapped in each other's arms. How could she have driven him away? She had loved him. He'd loved her. She should've guessed what he'd done and not spent so many years hating him. She should've trusted him. Trusted those eyes, hands, and lips. "I'm so sorry."

He slid his body up hers. She could feel his hardness pressing against her belly. "You wanna talk?"

"I... I... feel..."

"You feel soft and feminine and decidedly sensuous. You feel and smell like the woman I love. She loves and forgives me for all of my faults and misdeeds, and I had forgiven her long ago." He rolled over to his back and settled Julie on his stomach. "You sound like a woman whose head's lost in a whirlwind. Unable to focus on what's important."

His hands roamed across her, leaving a trail of tingling sparkles on her flesh. "Forget about the past. Don't think about the future. I'm here and I want your attention."

PG Excerpt

They reached her store and he stared at her car parked by the curb. “Harper doesn’t know where you live or anything about you. That means you’re safe for now, but he’ll probably search this area to find us. Stay cautious, okay? Drive your car from now on. Don’t walk anywhere.”

“Why are you avoiding my questions? You can tell me anything.”

“Not this. If you trust me, don’t ask those kinds of questions.” He tightened his fingers around her forearm as she tried to jerk free from his grip. “Listen to me, damn it. You mean a lot to me, but I can’t tell you this. At least not right now. That’s nothing against you. It’s all on me. I just need time to take care of this problem. Okay? I’m fucking stressed, in a shitload of pain, and I don’t need you to hound my ass.” He dropped his hand from her arm and scowled as though he just noticed the dirt and blood on his knuckles. “I’d like to go upstairs to clean up before you take me home. I don’t want Alan to know what happened.”

Mia dug through her purse with shaky hands, so angry she didn’t trust herself to speak.

He took the keys from her before the little pieces of metal slipped between her fingers, and he hugged her despite the grime on his skin and clothes.

Tears clogged her throat. Her mind screamed at her to push away from him, but the strength in his arms enveloped her and stole her will. His heartbeat soothed hers, and she no longer cared about his lies or if filth caked him.

At least not at the moment.

“I never meant for this to happen, Mia. I will fix this.”

“I know, but at what cost?” She pried her face from his chest to stare up at him. “You’re nothing if not determined, but I’m scared and confused. You have answers to my questions, but I won’t hound you for them as you so eloquently stated. I just thought we got past this. I thought you knew I would never insult or condemn you for whatever it is you did.”

“And I thought you knew not to push me too fucking hard.” His deep voice sent shivers of unease down her spine. “I have to keep certain parts of my past to myself.”

“Whatever.” Mia finally pushed against his chest for freedom and stomped to the stairwell door.

Holiday Hope – Media Kit
by
Libby Campbell

When Charles is dumped at the altar, will Hannah be able to mend his aching heart?

Blurb:
Hannah Hansen is only hoping for one thing this Christmas: someone to share her life. She’s not asking for the hottest male model, but please Santa, could he be a little bit alpha? Sensitive new age guys make great friends, but men who are decisive and slightly bossy make her tingle all over.
Then handsome, rich Steve Shewchuk invites her to be his last-minute, plus one at a wedding. Hannah’s hopes soar as Steve’s definitely the dominant type. But before their date is off the ground, Hannah realizes she has made a mistake. Steve’s veneer of an appealing alpha personality hides his thoughtless self absorption. In response to a call from the distressed bride-to-be, he drops Hannah a block from the church, forcing her to walk through a driving rainstorm alone.
Hannah arrives at the church, soaked to the skin, with her expensive hairdo ruined. She realizes her hopes for a future with Steve have washed down the drain along with her mascara.  When the groom, charming Charles DescĂ´teaux helps her in her moment of distress, there is an instant, electrical connection between them.
Could Charles be the assertive man she’s been hoping for? When Charles needs her help, will she be brave enough to rally to his side?

Excerpt
As Steve sped off, his tires sent up a tidal wave of water that drenched the hem of the long cape. Hannah sighed. Her shoes were soaked, her feet were wet, and now she’d have to have the cloak dry-cleaned before giving it back to Judy. How much would it cost to get something this big cleaned she wondered, kidding herself that she might have to take out a bank loan.
She walked toward the church, her eyes on the ground in front of her, hoping to avoid getting any wetter than she was. As she always did in an uncomfortable situation, she invented a drama to suit her circumstances. She imagined herself as an important ambassador to a royal event, the last to arrive. Her cape billowed around her, adding to her sense of drama and being from a faraway place. The drumming of the rain, car tires sloshing along the swamped street, and music pouring from a nearby club churned into a deafening thunder. A noble emissary like her wouldn’t be so easily deterred from her mission.
As she reached the outside the church, head bent, she didn’t notice that the canopy over the stairs was sagging with collected water. Nor did she hear a groomsman yell for everyone to stand back as he pushed a wide-mouthed broom into the sagging trough of the canopy.
At the exact moment that the water from the swollen belly of the canopy flooded over the side, Hannah stepped under the deluge. The force of it swept her hood off, soaked her hair and face, and drenched her from the inside out.
In seconds, her two-hundred-dollar hair style collapsed around her shoulders. Under the vintage dress, the sexy lingerie she’d put on in case she got lucky was now pasted to her skin by icy autumn rainwater, muddy from the dust that had been clinging to the canopy. Her feet swam in her shoes. Every ounce of resolve that she’d made to pass the evening with grace and finesse disappeared with the soaking.
The usher, a tall man who resembled a younger Dr. DescĂ´teaux, looked at her in open-mouthed horror. A gasp rose over the crowd who’d heard the warning and moved out of harm’s way.
Hannah stood, gazing into the far distance. “Fuck,” she said quietly and with little emotion, as though what had happened had been inevitable. “Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.”

Libby Campbell in her own words:
My romance novels feature strong, self-reliant women and the powerful men who love them. Romantic by nature, I write the stories I want to read: those that feature a spicy power exchange and deliver a sting in the tale.
Canadian by birth, I also lived in Australia for a couple of decades. While living there I overcame my aversion to saucer-sized spiders and, as a condition of marriage to my Aussie Prince Charming, I swore a lifelong allegiance to the Melbourne Football Club.
Then family called and my husband and I packed up and moved. We now live on a rocky island on Canada’s West Coast, close to beaches that once were frequented by smugglers and rumrunners.
My passions are reading and writing. I adore all animals and love hiking, beachcombing, and an occasional night of dancing.

Stormy by @AuthorTinaGayle , #babyboomers , #Romance , #SecondChance

Now available at

Blurb – Can friends become lovers? Even after the age of forty?

He’s wife is dead. She’s divorce with adult children.

For two years, Daniel and Karen have consoled each other during the trails of losing their spouses. Now, they are ready to turn their friendship into a loving relationship. After sharing a night of passion, all appears golden for a bright future for Karen and Daniel until she receives a call from her children saying her ex has had a heart attack.

Torn between, her need to support her children and her desire to be with Daniel, Karen leaves him and flees to the hospital. Coming face to face with  her ex-husband’s new, trophy wife, Karen begins to question exactly why her marriage fell apart. Was she to blame, and if so, should she try again?

On the outside looking in, Daniel must now convince Karen to let go of her past mistake and share a future with him?

Excerpt:

“Damn, Daniel, where are you?” Karen Barr glanced at her cell phone, hoping to see a message from him. She’d called him before she left her apartment, texted him from the station where she stopped for gas, and had even pulled off the highway a time or two in her attempt to reach him.
Nothing.
Had he changed his mind about this weekend?
Or was the bad weather interfering with his cell phone signal?
As if in answer to her question, the pounding rain increased, pouring water from the sky like an overflowing faucet. The windshield wipers worked in a quick pulsating rhythm. Nevertheless, they still didn’t achieve the task of improving visibility.
Karen flipped the switch to increase the speed and stared at the road ahead. The weatherman had predicted a storm tonight, and for once when she wanted him to be wrong, he was right.
How much farther did she have to go?
The turn off for Daniel’s cabin couldn’t be too far away. She’d caught sight of the old, red barn off to the left a few miles back, so the dirt lane to Daniel’s place had to be close.
She slowed the car, crawling along at a snail’s pace so as not to miss the path. Her headlights reflected off something metallic. She read the weathered sign. Happy.
The outdated tune of “Happy Trails to You” played through her head. Daniel had sung the song the first time he’d brought her here. He said it’d help her remember the way back.
Right, and where the hell was he?
Karen checked her cell phone again, and silently prayed he wasn’t lying in a muddy ditch somewhere. Hopefully, he had simply forgotten to recharge his phone, a particularly annoying habit he seemed to have.
“Damn it, Daniel, when I find you I...”
She didn’t exactly know what she’d do... kiss him?
Pictures of him flashed in her head... his sexy smile, his curly, dark hair with a touch of gray at his temples... the broad width of his shoulders, his trim physique... the round curve of his ass.
“Shit, why do I put myself through this? The man doesn’t see me as anything other than a friend,” Karen grumbled and flipped her blinker on out of habit.
She steered the car onto Happy Trails. The huge trees resembled mighty sentinels. Standing guard along the edge of the road, they blocked the rain with their large limbs. Slowing to avoid the abundant potholes on the gravel path, she tightened her grip on the steering wheel and searched for the end of Daniel’s driveway.
The storm and lack of communication from him had stretched her patience to the breaking point. She longed to be at her final destination and out of the car. “I should’ve never accepted his invitation to spend the weekend with him at his cabin. He can’t let go of the past,” she muttered angrily.
Hell, after her divorce, she gave up everything, her husband of twenty-plus-years, her beautiful country manor home, her cushy job, and her high-society friends. All she’d wanted was a new start—freedom from the endless upper crust parties and social climbing leeches. Thankfully now, her individual concerns were merely for her kids and herself. The infinite hours spent on creating a prominent public image for Carl was in her ex-husband’s trophy wife’s hands.
Unfortunately, Daniel’s world had changed for a different reason. His wife’s death had hit him extremely hard. He’d barely been able to cope and had turned to Karen. They’d worked together for years, and he had no else. His family lived out of the state. She’d tried to help, and they’d grown closer. Now, she wanted even more from him. Could they bridge the gap from friends and become lovers?
The dim light shining up ahead drew her attention. She figured Daniel must have left the porch light on for her. Then why didn’t he return her calls?

Was it his way of keeping her from backing out?

This was a sweet story and an easy read. I am actually a fan of Daniel because he seems to be a truly amazing man. You need distraction? Something that you can drown in and yet won't need weeks to get through This book absolutely is it! The steam is well written and amazing, the love scenes ultimately cute. Nice read, really.

Sweet story about new love with a widow and divorcee. I loved the development and implementation of their love and how it effects their life. Just because they are adults their new relationship is interrupted by life.

Sounds like a hot read,

Excerpt:

Ingrid balked. “I think I’ve been pretty productive the past few years. I’ve been the top salesperson in the province. Do you have any idea how much real estate I’ve sold?”
“No and I don’t particularly care either. I’m talking about you learning to develop a moral code, to be the type of person that Glyn and Rachel can invite into their house without having to count the silver before you leave.”
A guilty blush crept over Ingrid at that suggestion. She had already decided not to slip one of their antique silver spoons into her suitcase, but how had Lachlan known she’d even thought about it?
“I’m speaking metaphorically,” he said. “What I mean is that I’d like to be with the sort of woman I can take anywhere and not have to watch what she does when she thinks no one is looking.”
“I don’t know if I can be that woman.”
“I’m sure you can or I wouldn’t be here now. I’ve known someone like you in my past. She was much younger when we got together so she had fewer, less ingrained bad habits to correct. I was also younger and a lot less experienced then. I think I can straighten you out much faster, now.”
“Straighten me out?” Ingrid pursed her lips for a second. “What does that look, taste, and feel like?”
“It looks like you, bare-bottomed, stretched over my knee. It tastes like you eating humble pie when you go back to that cinema tomorrow and apologize for spoiling one of their seats and offer to pay for the cost of cleaning. It feels like my hand falling hard and fast on your upturned derrière.”
Ingrid’s throat turned desert dry, as feelings pinballed through her. She’d have to try to be honest, something she’d never done before. Sure, she was trying to move her life in that direction anyway but now Lachlan would be watching her. He would spank her if she failed. He might give up on her entirely if she wasn’t willing to try.
“So you want to punish me like I’m a recalcitrant child?” she asked.
“To put it plainly yes, if you agree. From where I’m sitting, from everything I know about you, your life was a train wreck last year. Until you’ve got a much stronger moral compass, you obviously need help.” He patted her two clasped hands with his one free one before letting them go.
She sat back, savoring the lingering strength of his touch. Heat rose from her clenching pussy. This was it, the dangerous, exciting aspect of love that she’d been so curious about. It was too late to discuss it with Rachel, to get an overview. She could either jump in and learn firsthand or she could turn her back on the most terrifying, alluring offer anyone had ever made her.

Author Q&A, please use no more than 4 or 5 of the following questions:

Where did Ingrid come from?

Those who have read the Simon in Charge series may remember her as the realtor who sold Simon and Sadie their Vancouver mansion. When she waltzed into that book, sassy and confronting, I had to know more about her. The only way to do that was to write her story.

Was there a particular reason to choose the subject of addiction?

It seemed clear to me from Ingrid’s behaviour in Sadie Says I Do, that she had some deep problems, definitely some that involved alcohol. Plus so many families these days have been touched by the destructive force of substance abuse, I wanted to tell at least one such story with a happy ending.

Ingrid is a lawless sort of character. Is she based on your own experiences?

You mean have I ever broken the law? Hm. I plead the 5th. Can a Canadian do that?

I remember my first speeding ticket though. I was driving home from a friend’s late at night. Dolly Parton’s Joelene, one of my favorite songs, was playing on the radio. The car behind me was driving really close so I sped up. The faster I went, the faster that car went. Right until they put on their lights and sirens.

As to any other breaches of the law, I’m taking the advice of the late, great Ingrid Bergman and reminding myself that happiness is good health and a bad memory.

Trusting Ingrid is longer than any of your other books, isn’t it?

True. Almost twice as long. In fact when I was writing it, I tried to think of ways to shorten it but I couldn’t because Ingrid is a complex, troubled woman from a difficult background. Some stories take longer than others.

Are there any other way that writing this book was different from your others?

Other than the sheer length of it, the editing process was quite unusual. I was on an extended road trip with my Leading Man when my editor’s comments reached me. We were in Jackson Wyoming in a small, dark motel room with last century wiring. I was feeling physical cramped at the tiny built in desk and wrenched the extension cord to try to get more elbow room. I knocked my water glass which spilled over my computer.

My reflexes were fast and I dried it with a towel and continued to work. Or tried to work.

Ha. Within minutes my keyboard and mouse were useless. My motherboard was fried.

Coincidentally many years ago when the Leading Man was hitchhiking around America, he drowned his camera in the Snake River, not far from where we were staying that night. If we ever go back there, we’re going to be very cautious with all electronics.

How did you recover from that?

Luckily my SSD (solid state drive) was fine. My Leading Man is a computer whiz and I had good back up. He gave me his laptop to continue and I was able to turn this part of the project around fast. That was a good thing. The following three nights we were in Yellowstone National Park. There is very little WiFi there. What’s available is only in the lobby of the buildings and it’s expensive.

Any comments on the title?

Like all the books in this series, it’s meant to have a number of interpretations. Ingrid has to trust herself. Lachlan has to trust her. Ingrid has to learn to trust Lachlan, to trust other people. She’s been a lone wolf her entire life until she meets Lachlan. What he wants from her is a big ask.

We see a lot of what makes your female leads clench. What makes you clench?

Easy – the Leading Man. His voice. His laugh. Looking at his hands when we’re in public and thinking about what they do to me in private. A whispered word to me in public. After all these years, I still like his Australian accent and his often unusual turn of phrase.

But I’m not blind. When a gracious, well-mannered man pays attention to me, I still feel a flirtatious rush, a physical thrill. But it stops there. Attractive R/L men are like the hot male protagonists in a sexy book: things to enjoy in the imagination.

What was your first kiss like?

Disappointing! I was 15 at a Christmas party. Someone had hung mistletoe over the stereo. I forgot it was there and went to adjust the volume of the music. A guy I didn’t like at all came over, wrapped me in a bear hug and kissed me. I remember thinking, ‘Well that’s ruined then. That is now and forever my first kiss.’

At that age, everything was very dramatic to me. I realize now that one disappointment doesn’t spoil what life brings next.

What was your best kiss?

That’s easy: on our first date my husband threated to spank me. That threat made me flush with desire down to my toes, although I tried to act cool.

When we were walking home after that dinner, I was primed and ready for him. He’s a strong lead on the dance floor and as we walked through a park, spun me into his arms and kissed me. I never wanted it to end. So far it hasn’t.
