PG Excerpt

They reached her store and he stared at her car parked by the curb. “Harper doesn’t know where you live or anything about you. That means you’re safe for now, but he’ll probably search this area to find us. Stay cautious, okay? Drive your car from now on. Don’t walk anywhere.”

“Why are you avoiding my questions? You can tell me anything.”

“Not this. If you trust me, don’t ask those kinds of questions.” He tightened his fingers around her forearm as she tried to jerk free from his grip. “Listen to me, damn it. You mean a lot to me, but I can’t tell you this. At least not right now. That’s nothing against you. It’s all on me. I just need time to take care of this problem. Okay? I’m fucking stressed, in a shitload of pain, and I don’t need you to hound my ass.” He dropped his hand from her arm and scowled as though he just noticed the dirt and blood on his knuckles. “I’d like to go upstairs to clean up before you take me home. I don’t want Alan to know what happened.”

Mia dug through her purse with shaky hands, so angry she didn’t trust herself to speak.

He took the keys from her before the little pieces of metal slipped between her fingers, and he hugged her despite the grime on his skin and clothes.

Tears clogged her throat. Her mind screamed at her to push away from him, but the strength in his arms enveloped her and stole her will. His heartbeat soothed hers, and she no longer cared about his lies or if filth caked him.

At least not at the moment.

“I never meant for this to happen, Mia. I will fix this.”

“I know, but at what cost?” She pried her face from his chest to stare up at him. “You’re nothing if not determined, but I’m scared and confused. You have answers to my questions, but I won’t hound you for them as you so eloquently stated. I just thought we got past this. I thought you knew I would never insult or condemn you for whatever it is you did.”

“And I thought you knew not to push me too fucking hard.” His deep voice sent shivers of unease down her spine. “I have to keep certain parts of my past to myself.”

“Whatever.” Mia finally pushed against his chest for freedom and stomped to the stairwell door.

Innocent until proven guilty … or until someone finds out.

Aidan Blake needs a plumber. Fast. His boiler is dead, his creaky old house crumbling around him. When his elderly neighbour recommends a local trader, George Mahon, Aidan jumps at the prospect of hot water and warm radiators.

But George, short for Georgina, is not exactly what he had in mind. He was expecting

something else entirely. A man for one thing, not the gorgeous single mother he finds in his house at the end of a long day of work.

Aidan turns out to be full of surprises too. Who would have imagined the smart, geeky businessman would have a BDSM playroom in his attic and a collection of whips and canes to make George’s head spin. And her bottom clench, though that’s another matter entirely. Maybe she;s not such an innocent after all. What does a girl have to do to get to play with those toys?

Just ask, it would seem. As they enter into a professional and personal agreement which soon blossoms into a sultry, kinky relationship, George continues to be surprised by Aidan's kindness and generosity, not to mention his skill with a spanking paddle.

First impressions aside, the two begin to build something together. And while they peel back the layers to discover their hidden depths, the old house yields up the mysteries of its own secret past. They soon realise that at first glance, nothing is ever quite as innocent it seems.

Innocent was previously published under the title First Impressions, with different cover art.

Innocent is all about not taking everything you see at face value. Both Aidan and George start out by making assumptions about each other, which turn out to be a long way from the truth. Still, that makes for some interesting discoveries as the story unfolds. Luckily they are both pretty adaptable people so manage to adjust their thinking somewhat, which is when the real fun starts. Even so, there are still some surprises waiting for them as George gets to grips with ripping Aidan’s rickety old house apart.

I really enjoyed writing Innocent, not least because I love writing strong, feisty heroines who can stand on their own feet and get things done. George is an example of that, a woman doing a traditionally male job and managing on her own. Her experiences with men have not been great so far, but she has her lovely baby daughter to show for it so isn’t complaining. Not that complaining is George’s style at all. She just dusts herself off and gets on with it.

First and foremost, I love writing strong, feisty heroines who can stand on their own feet and get things done. George is an example of that, a woman doing a traditionally male job and managing on her own.

Secondly, for me sexy characters are a must, but so is an intriguing location. I set this story in a small coastal village in Northumberland, in northern England. Alnmouth is a real place with a pretty little harbour, a tiny beach and multi-coloured cottages.

Third, of course, we need a sexy alpha male to get the juices going. Aidan comes as a surprise to George, not the sort of man she is interested in at all. He seems nerdy, wealthy, way out of her league. But he is kind to George’s little girl, he sorts out George’s computer and helps her to get her business accounts in order. As if that were not enough, he even introduces her to the pleasures of a decent spanking.

Sounds like a keeper to me, but will George think so?

Among other things, Innocent is the story of a young woman discovering the hidden depths of her own sexuality. Practical to the core, George has her hands full caring for her baby daughter as well as trying to get her ailing plumbing business back on its feet. She has neither the time, nor the energy, to spare for messing about with handsome, fiendishly sexy clients. All that goes out the window as soon as she sets eyes on the kinky playroom Aidan has in his attic.

Among other things, Innocent is a story about a woman doing a man’s job – or so Aidan thinks. George soon sets him straight. George is practical to the core, a skilled plumber and electrician. She works hard and there is pretty much no DIY task she can’t tackle. Her paperwork is another matter entirely. Aidan is more of a computer geek. While she is crawling about in a boiler suite and steel toe-capped boots re-wiring his house and fitting a new boiler, he is sorting out her ailing laptop and installing spreadsheets.

They make a great team, and never more than when George’s submissive nature starts to assert itself after she discovers the kinky toys her nerdy client likes to keep in his attic.

Innocent is a contemporary erotic romance, the story of a female plumber. My character, George, (short for Georgina) was inspired by a fabulous woman I met whilst picking up my daughter from school. Natalie always showed up at the school gates in overalls and steel toe-capped boots, so we got chatting and I asked if she was into DIY. Turns out she retrained as a plumber when she lost her job in a supermarket and had never looked back. She was self-employed, working hours to suit herself and her children, and earning decent money.

I like to write about self-reliant women with talent, determination, skills, and George definitely fits that image. She’s good at what she does and there’s pretty much no job she won’t tackle.

The story is set in the North East of England, an area I know quite well and love to visit. I like to use atmospheric locations when I can, it gives the story an extra dimension I think. Alnmouth is a gorgeous little coastal village with a pretty harbour and a beach. I don’t get the impression that much ever happens there, so maybe the goings on in Innocent would be just what they need to liven things up.

I loved writing Innocent. It was an opportunity to set a story in one of my favourite places, the North East of England, as well as create a lovely, feisty heroine to keep her sexy alpha male on his toes. But Innocent is more than just a kinky romance, although there is plenty of that in the book. It is also a mystery, and it has its serious side too but I won’t be giving away any spoilers. All I’m saying is, people, and houses, are rarely as innocent they seem.

EXCERPT 1 (PG Rated)

Startled, she glanced up at him as he entered, and closed the magazine in a hurry. Her expression was a guilty one, as though she’d been caught out. Which he supposed she had. She smiled at him, a wary, hopeful little grin. Something odd happened in the pit of his stomach. He told himself it was the baby. He liked babies.

“Ah, you’ll be Mr Blake then. You’re early.”

“I am. Aidan Blake that is. As for early…”

“Mrs Mathers said you wouldn’t be back until late. Well, later.”

“Did she? Where’s George?”

“George?”

“Yes. George, the plumber. His van’s outside.”

“I’m George. It’s my van. Is it in your way?”

She made to disengage the nursing infant but Aidan gestured for her to remain where she was. “Your van? But, I was expecting a plumber.” His heart sank. Cold showers beckoned.

“I am a plumber. It says so on my van.” A note of indignation had crept in.

Not sexist by nature, Aidan could have kicked himself for his hasty assumptions. “Yes, I apologise. But I was expecting a burly, beefy bloke, and you’re—well, you’re just not that. Even so, I had no business assuming…”

George smiled at him, a genuine expression this time which went beyond pleasant in Aidan’s view, definitely tending toward the breath-taking end of the scale. Dazzling even. He might have smiled back had he not been so stunned.

She shifted the nursing infant in her arms. “Look, I shouldn’t be doing this here. I wouldn’t have, not usually. But the job took longer than I imagined it would, and Lily was hungry, so… Anyway, I’ll go feed her in the van.”

“No, that’s fine.”

“It isn’t fine. I’m embarrassing you. I know some people can be squeamish about breastfeeding, so I’ll just…”

Aidan could be described as a lot of things, but squeamish was not one of them. Especially not where anything to do with female anatomy was concerned, though coming across a woman breastfeeding in his kitchen was not something he’d had to contend with before. Still, a first time for everything. He dumped his briefcase on the table next to the discarded magazine and turned toward the sink. “Please, stay where you are. Finish off… well, just take your time. Would you like a coffee?” He paused, turned to her, “That is, if I have water?”

“You do, and it even runs hot now if you want that. White please, no sugar.”

“Alleluia. You fixed the problem then?” He reached for his jar of instant.

Excerpt:

“By the female articles in the room, I’m assuming I’m not staying in here alone.” With a wicked smile, Jack lifted her sheer robe from the lounge.

Encourage by his comment, she grinned and shut the door. “Well, I’m hoping you won’t mind. With so many guests in the castle, some of us are forced to share quarters.”

Dropping the garment onto the cushion, he strolled forward with the prowling covertness of a stalker. Pictures flashed through her head of his predator skills in the woods—on a hunt.

Strong hands captured her waist before he tugged her close. “Do I receive any benefits for my sacrifice?”

Thrill to have him so close, she drew in his tantalizing scent of inflamed pheromones that ignited a hunger in her sexually deprived body. Excitement tempted her hands to slide under his jacket to the curve of his shoulders and slip his coat down his arms. “Like?”

Not releasing her for more than a moment, he rid himself of the garment, stepped closer and tugged her against his chest. “Like a taste of,” he leaned forward and kissed the side of her neck. “The luscious cream coating the lips of…” his tongue circled her ear. With a low moan, he whispered, “your hot pu… uh… female opening.”

Again, impressed with how he asked nicely before taking what he wanted, she panted, “I’d be more than happy to offer you whatever you want for your willingness to share.”

Strong hands gripped her ass, shoving her against his hard length. “Anything I want?”

Anticipation dotted her skin, making her wonder why men thought women didn’t want sex too?

“If it’s within my means to give it to you.” Rubbing her aching breasts against his chest, unable to deny his urgency for sex any more than she could wrangle with her own.

“Good, because I’ll demand a great deal.”

Their chance encounter resulted in a steamy affair, but will his former gang and a parole officer tear them apart?

Excerpt 1 (PG)

Mia scowled at her brother as he headed up the stairwell, and she used her body to block his entrance into her home.
Jim didn’t seem to notice her tense body language and pushed her aside to enter. “Good morning.” He hugged her with one arm and frowned at the hardwoods. “There’s something sticky on the floor.” He scraped his shoes over it a few times and headed toward the kitchen. “What’s for breakfast?”
“Why are you here?” Mia shut the door, grabbed the towel she’d left on the sofa, and used it to cover the evidence of her desire on the floor. The last thing she needed was for her brother to realize what that sticky substance was. Her gaze darted toward the telephone and answering machine combo in the living room and back to Jim as he picked up the pancake mix. The U-shaped kitchen occupied one half of the loft’s airy floor plan, and she could see into the kitchen through a gap between the upper and lower cabinets. “You know to call first. I don’t have any messages on the machine, and I doubt you called my cell phone.”
“I’m in the neighborhood to see a parolee for an unexpected visit—well, unexpected for him—but I thought I’d stop by to see you first.” Jim sat the box aside and opened the fridge door. “You have any more blueberry muffins?”
“No, you cleaned me out the last time you showed up unannounced.” She crossed her arms and glanced at the closed bedroom door. “Jim, you need to leave.” She’d rather shave her legs without aloe-infused shaving cream or live a whole month without a hairdryer than introduce her parole officer brother to her parolee—boyfriend, perhaps?—the day after the best sex of her life. Talk about awkward.
“What’s the rush? I haven’t seen you in a few days.” He grabbed an apple from the bowl on the counter and rubbed it on his polo shirt to shine the fruit before he sank his teeth in. “Why are you so uppity?”
“I’m in a bathrobe, Jim, and you’re irritating the crap out of me. I have plans today and need to get going.”
“I bought you that robe for Christmas last year. It’s nice to know you use it.” He glanced at the food on the marble countertop. “Looks to me like you were about to fix breakfast. Pancakes are fine since you’re out of muffins.”
Her blood pressure rose. She wrapped her hand around Jim’s arm and dragged him out of the kitchen as a noise resonated from the bedroom.
“Wait a minute. What was that?”
“Just rats. Come on.” Mia jerked on his arm again, but he refused to budge.
Jim shook off her hand, took a step toward the bedroom, and stilled. “Oh God, there’s a man in there. No wonder you want me to leave.” He scowled at the splotches on her neck as though he just noticed them. “That’s very professional. What will all those snooty ladies say tomorrow after you open the store?”
She clasped her neck. “Leave, Jim. I don’t want you to ruin this.”
“Fine, I’ll go.” He patted the gun he always wore beneath his loose blazer. “Don’t worry. I won’t have a problem with him as long as he’s not Evan.”
She doubted that. Evan was blond, gorgeous, and an up-and-coming photographer with a great body. Jim hated him on sight. Mason, a tattooed ex-con who worked at a garage, wouldn’t stand a chance unless Mia buttered Jim up first.
“Just to be sure.” Mia grabbed her brother’s arm again. “We can meet for lunch tomorrow and I’ll tell you about him.” A door creaked open behind her, and she whipped her gaze toward the bedroom just as Jim did.
Mason paused in the doorway, dressed in his jeans and wrinkled dress shirt. The shirt hung open and revealed his sexy snake tattoo. His eyes widened like saucers.
“What the hell?” Jim dropped the apple on the floor and jerked free from Mia’s hold. A dark glower morphed his face into a mask of anger, and he leveled that hate-ridden stare on her new lover. “Mason Harding. What the fuck are you doing here?”
Mason folded his arms across his chest and leaned against the doorframe. His lips sealed together in a thin line as his right cheek twitched. Tension palpitated so strong between the men she feared the windows and light bulbs would shatter at any moment.
“How do you know him, Jim?” Mia swiped damp strands of hair behind her ears, a little afraid to know the answer.
Her brother spun toward her and fisted his hands. “He’s one of my parolees.”
Oh God, no. She covered her mouth with her hands. I’m gonna throw up.

Excerpt –(G)
“What has you so disturbed, Lady Jacobson?”
Startled, Genevieve squealed in protest, her hand went to her bosom. “Oh, Lord Kendrick, you frightened me. It was not good of you, sir.” Her chastisement, firm.
Kendrick stared at her hand on her chest before raising his eyes to hers. “My deepest apologies. I thought you heard me approach. I made sufficient noise.” His apology sounded a bit like scolding. “One must be aware of one’s environ, milady.”
“I was deep in thought as one often is when taking a walk.” Her response had a hint of censure in answer to his scolding.
“I believe you are trying to best me. It is not polite.” One couldn’t miss the twinkle in his eye and the twitch of his lips.
“I am merely mimicking your mannerisms, milord. As a visitor in your home, I would take my cues from you.”
“TouchĂ©,” he said with a nod and the hint of a smile. “I believe we are well enough known to each other that you can safely call me Kendrick when we are informal.”
“Kendrick then. Thank you. And I am Genevieve.”
He nodded his agreement. “Not Ginny then?”
“No, I am trying to add maturity to my presentation. Ginny negates that outcome.”
“I’m not sure I agree but it is your name. What were your thoughts earlier?”
“Nothing really. I’m to decide on a mate regardless of my own personal desires and it has me quite flummoxed.” What she had disclosed made her eyes widen. He never faltered.
“Indeed. I thought that the expectation of all young ladies.”
“Expectation, yes. Desire, not always. I am not one who desires it. You see, I have considered those who have wandered into my sphere but have found them inadequate for my personal needs. They are too old, too young, too immature, too light in the pockets or too under their parent’s thumb. But there was one characteristic they all seemed to share; they were boring. I believe I deserve entertainment if I must endure all else.”

BIO
Alyssa Bailey

USA Today and #1 International best-selling author of historic and contemporary romances, Alyssa Bailey, is a dyed in the wool Texan living amongst the beauty of Southeast Alaska. Along with her husband, she lives where the sky meets the rainforest; the forest meets the mountains that touch the ocean, and the wildlife frolic on land, sea, and air. Humans, the ultimate interlopers, are wedged in where allowed and are properly thankful for the privilege.

Alyssa loves writing realistic romance for the naughty in all of us. She takes from her own experiences, often scrambling events from her life with her imagination, ensuring the fictitious worlds she creates seem real and draw you in.

She loves writing power exchanges between strong, intelligent, sassy women who are not afraid to make a stand and loving men confident enough to give his woman space, but Alpha enough to keep her safe despite her choices is a common theme and of course, there’s always a happily ever after.

If she can throw a little humor, or suspense in her stories, it’s even better. Her characters live amongst historical lords and ladies, in the contemporary realm amongst men and women of the world, and of course, hard-working cowboys and fiercely romantic Indians.
