  • “I said this last night but obviously you weren’t minding me. As long as I’m here, I’m the boss.”

Blurb:

Identical twins, Verity and Felicity (Lissie) Pettigrew inherit an abandoned farm in the remote hills of the Methow Valley. Little do the twins know, but their windfall harbors a secret. While exploring the old barn, Verity stumbles into a hidden portal and is instantly transported more than one hundred years into the past.

In 1885, on the same farm, Will Dawson is saddling his horse when a disturbance in a corner of the barn catches his attention. In his haste to rescue the gorgeous woman in the center of the disturbance, Will is flung far into the future.

Meanwhile, Lissie arrives on the farm looking for Verity, but finds the handsome, slightly suspicious cowboy instead. From their first words to one another, sparks fly.

Lissie’s modern manners and profane language offend Will. His solution? Some old-fashioned discipline delivered on the spot.

Affronted by Will’s distinctly un-twenty-first century approach to male/female relationships, Lissie challenges his authority at every turn in spite of nearly always ending up over his knee.

Meanwhile, Verity must deal with life in 1885. Although accepted into Will’s family, she longs to get back to the 21st century and the man she loves.

Can Will live in a future in which progress comes at the price of everything he holds dear? Can Lissie win him over, and teach him that women can be independent and willful but still soft and sexy? Will Verity find her way back to the man she loves?

Publishers note: This stand alone love story includes scenes of domestic discipline and spicy romance.

Excerpt
Verity went back to her woodshed hideaway, trying to estimate how long it would take everyone to fall asleep. The heat of the day still clung to the house and all the windows were open. When she thought she heard snoring, she inched across the backyard, shaking all over. Not knowing where she was or who these people were meant she had no idea of the consequences if she was caught. She clenched and unclenched her hands. It was now or never. Her complaining stomach insisted now. She had to eat or she wouldn’t be able to help herself. She tried the door but her hands, slick with nervous sweat, slid off the door knob. She wiped them on her jeans. Exhaling, she tried again. The door creaked open.
Moonlight flooded the room in front of her, spotlighting a large kitchen table with ten carved chairs arranged comfortably around it.
Verity listened, ready to bolt at the first sound of anyone approaching. Silence.
The room was foreign and familiar, all at once. The window over the sink was exactly like the one in her house. But her house no longer had a rough metal trough for a sink, nor was it fed by a hand pump. The lingering scent of freshly-baked bread made Verity’s mouth water. A cloth was draped over a couple of shapes on the counter. She tiptoed over, lifting the cloth, hoping for something good. Her prayers were answered when she found two big pies in deep tin dishes. She inhaled deeply. One smelled of chicken. The other teased her with the fragrance of apple and cinnamon.
Get in and get out, she told herself. Using her Swiss Army knife, she cut a huge slice from each one. She folded the slices into the cloth, forcing herself to resist the temptation to shove them into her mouth right there. Turning to leave as quietly as she could, it dawned on her that she was a thief in her own house. In spite of her frayed nerves, a small smile crossed her lips.
With the appetizing smell of the pies wafting up, it took every ounce of Verity’s willpower to walk stealthily to the back door. As she passed the end of the table, a folded newspaper in front of the big carver chair caught her eye. On the cover of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, a picture of the Statue of Liberty encased in scaffolding took up half the page. Beside it was a picture of a man Verity did not recognize. Below that was another image of the statue. Squinting hard at the old-fashioned print, Verity was just able to make out the date on the banner: the week ending June 13, 1885.
Is that where she was? June 1885?
No, it was autumnal here, just like it had been in the Methow Valley where she’d been until early this afternoon. The grass was end-of-summer brown and the leaves on the birches and cottonwood were starting to turn.
The sound of nails clicking on the floor above her forced Verity to move. She tucked the newspaper under her arm, sliding toward the door. A light thud of something falling softly followed the nail scraping upstairs. A series of small yips. She waited. When there was no more noise, she decided the dog was just turning in his sleep. Easing the door open she let herself onto the back porch again, listening for any sound that might indicate someone had woken and was coming after her. Her luck was strong. There was no further stirring.

Widowed for six years, he is looking for another woman to share his life. She must be smart, sexy, and able to obey his inflexible rules. He has observed Sadie from a distance and decided she is just what he’s looking for.
Always one to challenge authority, Sadie tests Simon’s boundaries with her lively wit and recalcitrant behavior. He is amused but unmoved. Soon Sadie is regularly over Simon’s knee for being her sassy, strong-willed self. And she loves it!
When he proposes, she accepts without a second thought. The time arrives for her to leave her working-class world of public schools and sausages on the backyard barbecue to move into Simon's circle of wealth and privilege where children attend private schools and servants serve guests in lavish society homes. Excerpt :

Simon stood and put his champagne flute on the table. His lips twitched, as if he was fighting a smile. “Let me guess when you started having these doubts. I’d pin them as starting about a week ago, maybe the day you drove out to the airport and picked up your mother?”
Without meeting his eyes, I took his outstretched hand let him help me to my feet. He’d pegged the moment precisely. I was lifting Mom’s suitcase off the carousel when she made the first jibe. She looked over my shoulder as if searching for someone.
With a lift of her chin she taunted, “Where is the legendary Simon Jacobson? Is he too busy to welcome me himself?”
To the outside world, Mom acted as though she admired Simon. She complimented how well he treated me, how lovely his house was, how generously he treated his guests. When it was just the two of us she cracked critical, undermining comments that bit like a thousand beestings.
She said things like, “Simon’s friends live in a different world. You can’t have him without them and they speak a foreign tongue.”
With a skill perfected over my lifetime, Mom eroded my confidence that someone like him could love someone like me, and that the rest of world would accept us. Her week-long campaign to make me question my future with Simon was a resounding success. The more time I spent in the company of his friends that weekend, the less I believed that I would ever belong there.
Now it was just Simon and me, a lazy Sunday afternoon, and an engagement to cancel.
I breathed in the soft savory smell of him standing in front of me. His hand was warm and strong as he held mine. He lifted my chin, forcing me to look him in the eyes. “I asked you a question: did you start having second thoughts as a result of your mother’s visit?”
I turned away.
“I’ll take that as a yes.” He kissed me on the cheek. “I think we need to discuss this. With you over my knee.”

  • Cynthia says: You just want to see me weak and submissive.
Antony says: Princess, I’ve seen you submissive. I’ve never seen you weak.

Blurb:

Antony Jacobson first held Cynthia Donohue in his arms at a wintry December wedding. Four months later, the statuesque, silver-haired woman continues to haunt his thoughts.

Cynthia is about to move to the West Coast to be closer her daughter. As her plane touches down in her new city, she steels herself to cope on her own. When she finds Antony waiting at the arrivals gate, a wave of gratitude and desire floods through her.

A lifetime of independence hasn’t prepared Cynthia for a submissive role in a relationship. She craves love, romance, and someone to share sunsets. But deep down she believes her dreams are out of her reach. Worse, they are a betrayal of her feminist principles. That’s fine: indomitable, handsome Antony will wait.

She is tired and aching beyond all memory so Antony takes charge. Very quickly, he realizes there is something wrong, very wrong, with Cynthia’s health. He insists that she see a doctor.

She says he is overprotective. He agrees. He is also determined to look after her if she won’t look after herself. A trip over his knee shakes Cynthia to the core. In spite of herself she likes – she wants – this loving correction. More importantly, she agrees that he may be right about seeing a doctor.

Is Antony too much, too soon, or is he just what the doctor ordered?

Excerpt

Antony opened his arms. “Come here.”
Cynthia tilted her head, not understanding what he wanted.
“Come. Sit on my knee for a bit, we’re going to have a little talk.”
She saw awkwardly on his left thigh and he responded by lifting her legs up, so they draped over the right arm of the chair. There was no choice but to put her arm around his neck for balance.
He bounced her a couple of times. “That’s nice, isn’t it?”
“It is.” She leaned into him, enjoying the softness of his beard rubbing her face.
“I’ve told you I’m going to spank you. How do you feel about that?”
“I haven’t been spanked since I was a little kid and even then it was just a couple of fast swats.” She shrugged. “I guess I’ll try anything once.”
“If you and I are going continue seeing each other, you’d better be prepared for it to happen on a regular basis. How long and hard the spankings are will depend entirely on you.”
She bent her head, hiding behind the curtain of her silver bob that draped in front of her face. “Really?”
“I’m a lover not a fighter,” he said, hugging her gently. “Spanking is a way of clearing the air between us. It keeps things on an even keel, relieves built up tension.”
“You mean your tension about what I do?”
“For the most part, yes. I’m not going to bullshit you. I’m going to be the leader in our relationship. You are an amazingly strong and capable woman. But you’re also stubborn and willful. You’ve been boss of your own life for so long, you think you you’re taking care of yourself, that you’re self-aware. But you’re not. You know some of the things that you’ve been doing like taking care of business, taking care of your mother, your daughter, your father. That’s not looking after yourself. That’s looking after community which is important.”
He held her a bit closer. “But you can’t look after anyone if you don’t look after yourself. Everything I’ve learned about you tells me your needs haven’t been looked after for a very long time. No one who is looking after themselves gets so exhausted they can’t manage a half hour walk. You need someone to watch over you. If you’ll let me, I’d like that to be me.”
She leaned into him, tired to the core, grateful just to be sitting on his lap. “I’d like it to be you, too. I think. I don’t know. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have someone telling me what to do all the time.”
“I’m not going to tell you what to do all the time. Not only are you too smart to need that, it would bore me too quickly to have to do it. I’m only going to take control when I can see that you’ve lost your way.”
He lifted her chin, meeting her eyes. “Does that sound fair?”
“Sure.” She brushed a lock of hair behind her ears.
“Do you know why I’m going to spank you today?”

Author Q&A

Libraries or bookstores?

Both. I love my local library. I mean love it. At Christmas I take the librarians a bit box of chocolates to say thank you for their help. But I can’t resist stores either and Victoria BC has a few outstanding, independent bookshops. I have to talk sternly to myself before I go into them. A person has only so much shelf space after all.

Then there is Amazon. How great is it? I want to read a book? A minute later it’s on my Kindle. Magic!

If I love an ebook or a library book, I buy a print copy so I can have it to hold and cherish.

What genres do you write in?

This one – erotic fiction, which I love. It’s playful and fun but still challenges me to write well.

In the past, I’ve also had one YA book and one contemporary fiction novel published as well.

Do you like to outline or just dive right in when writing?

As a minimum, I draw a graph, outlining the acts, the change in the ordinary world, the halfway point, the crisis and the climax. Then I scribble all over it as my story builds.

Recently I’ve started collaborating on a time travel novel with another Blushing author. This has forced both of us to do a lot more outlining. We have an enormous spreadsheet with all our chapters outlines on it as well as ancillary spreadsheets that collect character details and research points.

Where do you find inspiration for writing?

In the world around me: in what I read, what I see, what I hear on the news. Stories pop up in my head constantly but there’s a lot of chaff in that wheat.

One thing for sure, once I’m writing a novel, I’m always surprised at how the universe starts to ‘speak’ to me about it. For instance when I found the perfect house for Simon and Sadie to buy in Sadie Says I Do, I wondered what obstacle might make it hard for them to move in quickly. Later that same week, I read an article about a prominent Canadian whose house sale was snarled up with liens by the Canada Revenue Agency (our tax office)

If you could travel to any time, what time period would you like to explore?

I’d love to visit Victorian England if I could live as one of the upper classes. My roots are English but, on my mother’s side at least, my family were the ruled, not the ruling class.

I’d want to be the Victorian lady with a handsome, stern but loving husband who lets her sleep until 9, shop for fine clothes, and play cards until early morning hours.

Do you have a favorite vacation spot?

My favorite vacation spots are quiet and remote; I don’t seek bright lights. I’ve spent months in the Australian outback which I adored.

These days, my husband and I frequently escape to Salt Spring Island, in the Canadian Gulf Islands (the other half of Washington State’s San Juan Islands). Seguro Island in the Simon in Charge series and Seeing Ronnie is a fictional island based on Salt Spring. A lot of the features are the same: the lovely ferry ride to get there, the Saturday markets, the wonderful hiking trails in the forest, and the history of the blacks who moved there to escape slavery.

We love Salt Spring because of the lack of light pollution. On summer nights we sit on the lawn, listening to the frogs, watching the bats come out to feed, while counting shooting stars.
