Kai (A Dark Assassins #Novel Book One) by Valerie Ullmer #PNR #Romance

Media Kit for Kai (A Dark Assassins Novel Book One)

Title:  Kai (A Dark Assassins Novel Book One)
Author:  Valerie Ullmer
Genre:  Paranormal Romance

Kai will have to keep Liv alive after she sacrificed her entire career to save him and other immortals.

BLURB

There are two words that described Kai.

Remote and Deadly.

And until six months ago, he was fine with that description. But when the vampire assassin spots a curvaceous woman, a human no less, who would come to fill his thoughts, he would gladly shake his persona for a moment in time with her. Instead, he kept his distance, watching out for her and learning more about her every time their paths crossed. But he had yet to speak to her. When a turn of events thrusts her into his solitary life, he must decide whether to complete his assignment, or protect her.

Olivia Sabin had dedicated her life to her work; finding a cure for cancer. She had hidden behind the mask of a scientist who cares little about anything beyond her laboratory, and for a long while she believed it herself. But when a mysterious man came to frequent the diner she visited nightly, her awareness of him devastated her concentration, and she came to look forward to the glimpses of him, however brief.

When she stumbles upon a horrific experiment at work, she knows he’s the only one she can turn to. She’s willing to sacrifice everything in order to protect him and others of his kind from the same fate. But first, she needs to find a way to get him to hear her explanation.

EXCERPT

That night, he had been trailing Ms. Na soon after the sky darkened, and he watched as she slipped past security of a biotech company.  For long minutes, he had thought he lost her.  When she emerged with a box under her arm, she glanced around to see whether she had been spotted, and happened to glance in his direction and froze.  He knew that she couldn’t have spotted him, and yet she acted as though she did.
Within seconds, she had darted toward what he assumed was another exit, and his eyes widened when she jumped up to the corner of the building, and pushed off.  He soon realized what she was doing.  Ricocheting back and forth between the wall and the corner of the building, it took her three leaps before she launched herself successfully up and over the wall.
Without hesitation, he launched himself over the barrier with ease.  When he landed, he felt the unmistakable press of a knife against his neck.  His eyes glanced down at the tactical curved weapon, and almost started when she pressed her lithe body against his back instead of pressing the knife harder against his skin.
“Hello, gorgeous,” she purred.
He didn’t respond in kind, but considering all he could feel was her body, he knew that she ditched the package somewhere close, or had given it to someone.  He doubted that she worked with anyone, so it had to be close.  He didn’t really care about what it contained because the box wasn’t his assignment—she was—but he needed confirmation that what she had stolen was dangerous.
Her hand opened on his chest and caressed his pecs before it moved lower.  Her hand grazed over his cock, taking her time to explore, before she slid her hands underneath his tight black shirt.  Her touch caused no reaction.
“You don’t talk much, but you don’t need to in order to fuck.”
He heard the knife stick into the ground, and before he could react, she opened her fingers and pressed harder against his taut skin.  He used her inattention to kick the knife away and scanned the area for the package.  He spotted it easily.
Without answering, he turned around and pressed her against the wall, using his body to keep her off the ground, and buried his face against her neck.  As he pressed his hard body against hers, she spoke in Chinese, a language he didn’t understand.  He didn’t bother asking her what she said.
“What did you steal?”  He distracted her by using his tongue, sliding against her collarbone, up her neck, until he had the lobe between his teeth.  Biting down, he could smell her desire for him intensify.  Although he hadn’t fucked a human in a long while, he found his lack of interest in the beautiful spy to be slightly irritating, yet expected.
“Biological agent,” she gasped.
His hand slid to her ass and pressed her harder against him, using her pleasure to keep her distracted from his next move.  He almost regretted that he wouldn’t be able to sink his cock into her tightness, somehow knowing that she would have kept up with his sexual demands.  But instead of feeling desire, he felt nothing.
He scraped his teeth against her skin, a warning as to what was to come, a split second before his fangs pierced her throat.
His targets always fought, a survival instinct that the humans had, yet rarely used.  She was no different.  Her fists pounded against his chest, and he barely felt it.  Her blood, although he expected a sweetness to it, had a horrid metallic taste that he hated.  Her heartbeat fluttered in her chest, and her arms gave out before her body sagged against his.  With one final beat of her heart, any sounds from her ceased, and he released her.
Although her blood gave him strength, the taste of those he killed had worsened over the years, and he could barely stand to drain them dry.  In this case, he used her desire to his advantage.  The taste would dissipate soon, he hoped.

Blurb:

Identical twins, Verity and Felicity (Lissie) Pettigrew inherit an abandoned farm in the remote hills of the Methow Valley. Little do the twins know, but their windfall harbors a secret. While exploring the old barn, Verity stumbles into a hidden portal and is instantly transported more than one hundred years into the past.

In 1885, on the same farm, Will Dawson is saddling his horse when a disturbance in a corner of the barn catches his attention. In his haste to rescue the gorgeous woman in the center of the disturbance, Will is flung far into the future.

Meanwhile, Lissie arrives on the farm looking for Verity, but finds the handsome, slightly suspicious cowboy instead. From their first words to one another, sparks fly.

Lissie’s modern manners and profane language offend Will. His solution? Some old-fashioned discipline delivered on the spot.

Affronted by Will’s distinctly un-twenty-first century approach to male/female relationships, Lissie challenges his authority at every turn in spite of nearly always ending up over his knee.

Meanwhile, Verity must deal with life in 1885. Although accepted into Will’s family, she longs to get back to the 21st century and the man she loves.

Can Will live in a future in which progress comes at the price of everything he holds dear? Can Lissie win him over, and teach him that women can be independent and willful but still soft and sexy? Will Verity find her way back to the man she loves?

Publishers note: This stand alone love story includes scenes of domestic discipline and spicy romance.

Excerpt
Verity went back to her woodshed hideaway, trying to estimate how long it would take everyone to fall asleep. The heat of the day still clung to the house and all the windows were open. When she thought she heard snoring, she inched across the backyard, shaking all over. Not knowing where she was or who these people were meant she had no idea of the consequences if she was caught. She clenched and unclenched her hands. It was now or never. Her complaining stomach insisted now. She had to eat or she wouldn’t be able to help herself. She tried the door but her hands, slick with nervous sweat, slid off the door knob. She wiped them on her jeans. Exhaling, she tried again. The door creaked open.
Moonlight flooded the room in front of her, spotlighting a large kitchen table with ten carved chairs arranged comfortably around it.
Verity listened, ready to bolt at the first sound of anyone approaching. Silence.
The room was foreign and familiar, all at once. The window over the sink was exactly like the one in her house. But her house no longer had a rough metal trough for a sink, nor was it fed by a hand pump. The lingering scent of freshly-baked bread made Verity’s mouth water. A cloth was draped over a couple of shapes on the counter. She tiptoed over, lifting the cloth, hoping for something good. Her prayers were answered when she found two big pies in deep tin dishes. She inhaled deeply. One smelled of chicken. The other teased her with the fragrance of apple and cinnamon.
Get in and get out, she told herself. Using her Swiss Army knife, she cut a huge slice from each one. She folded the slices into the cloth, forcing herself to resist the temptation to shove them into her mouth right there. Turning to leave as quietly as she could, it dawned on her that she was a thief in her own house. In spite of her frayed nerves, a small smile crossed her lips.
With the appetizing smell of the pies wafting up, it took every ounce of Verity’s willpower to walk stealthily to the back door. As she passed the end of the table, a folded newspaper in front of the big carver chair caught her eye. On the cover of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, a picture of the Statue of Liberty encased in scaffolding took up half the page. Beside it was a picture of a man Verity did not recognize. Below that was another image of the statue. Squinting hard at the old-fashioned print, Verity was just able to make out the date on the banner: the week ending June 13, 1885.
Is that where she was? June 1885?
No, it was autumnal here, just like it had been in the Methow Valley where she’d been until early this afternoon. The grass was end-of-summer brown and the leaves on the birches and cottonwood were starting to turn.
The sound of nails clicking on the floor above her forced Verity to move. She tucked the newspaper under her arm, sliding toward the door. A light thud of something falling softly followed the nail scraping upstairs. A series of small yips. She waited. When there was no more noise, she decided the dog was just turning in his sleep. Easing the door open she let herself onto the back porch again, listening for any sound that might indicate someone had woken and was coming after her. Her luck was strong. There was no further stirring.

Claimed by the Captain by Gracie Malling #WitchFinder, #Adventure

Title: Claimed By the Captain

Release date: 8th April 2016

Key words: Historical, Romance, Spanking, Discipline, Head of Household, Witch Finder, Adventure

Blurb: When Captain Thomas Edwards returns home after twenty years at sea to take ownership of the White Hart Inn following the death of his father, he has not even reached the edge of the village before he comes across a miscreant stealing apples from a local farmer’s orchard. Upon discovering that the thief is a young woman named Ellen who has been employed in his father’s inn for years, he considers it his responsibility to bare her bottom and spank her soundly.
In addition to working as a servant at the White Hart, Ellen has become known for her skill as an herbalist, and the last thing she needs is a stern sea captain getting in the way of her curing the ailments of her fellow villagers with a potion or tonic when the need arises. But despite her shock at being punished in such a shameful manner for nothing more than stealing a few apples, to Ellen’s surprise the painful chastisement leaves her aching for Thomas to take her in his arms and make her his.
Despite his willingness to spank her bare bottom whenever he feels it necessary, Ellen finds herself falling deeper in love with Thomas with every passing day. But when plague strikes the village and a witch finder is summoned, Thomas forbids Ellen from using her herbs to aid her friends and neighbors. As the situation grows more desperate, will she disobey him and put her skills to use even if it means risking her life, and can he keep her safe if she does?

Excerpt : Ellen was not a fool; she knew when she was caught. “Sir, if you heard it all, why are you asking me these questions?” she asked with an impatient sigh.
To see if you would be honest with me,” he replied, his voice heavy with disapproval. “But now I see you are a liar as well as a witch.”
Ellen wrenched her arm out of his grip. “How dare you!”
Do you deny it?”
Aye, sir,” she replied angrily. “I merely help others as nanny did before me.”
With charms and poultices and spells? Do you not see the very great danger you put yourself in by indulging in these practices?”
Ellen planted her fists on her hips. “Nanny said—”
Your grandmother should have known better than to teach you such tricks,” said the master, taking a step closer. “She has made a target of you.”
You will not speak of nanny that way!”
Take care, girl,” warned the master, “or I shall put you over my knee.”
Ellen felt heat rush to her face and the muscles in her stomach clenched painfully. It was all so sudden; her body reacting to his words, against her will.
She swallowed. “I have not stolen anything, sir.”
Not tonight,” he said. “But you have been disrespectful and argumentative. As I told you yesterday, it is my responsibility to protect you as it is your duty to obey me. I would be failing in that responsibility if I allowed you to continue with this reckless behaviour.”
The brief flare of fear (or was it excitement?) was extinguished in a rush of outrage. Ellen drew herself up to her full height. “It is not for you to tell me what I may and may not do! Sir,” she added with venom, attempting once more to return to the inn.
But the master was quicker and she found her way blocked again.
Have you already forgotten your promise to obey me, Ellen?” he demanded, his voice quieter now but still intense. “Were the tears and remorse yesterday a lie as well?”

Questions

So first, of course, the obvious question. How did you become a writer?
I’ve been obsessed with writing stories for pretty much as long as I’ve been reading them: so since the age of about five at least! I must have started thousands of stories between then and my mid-twenties but I never finished anything: I just didn’t seem to have the stamina. This was constantly frustrating – because I love writing so much – so for my 26th birthday, I bit the bullet and bought myself a place on a creative writing course… and I haven’t looked back since!

Are you like any of your heroines?
If I had to choose, I’d say I was probably most like Jo (from Troublemaker). A bit cheeky, occasionally sulky, and completely in love with being spanked!

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I love going for long walks with our awesome dog, watching all the films and reading all the books, having millions of cuddles with the people I love, pursuing increasingly ridiculous hobbies (including Scottish Country Dancing and pirate re-enactment), practising yoga, playing the piano and going out for cocktails with my friends.

If you were attending a Halloween party, what would your costume be and why?
I quite like the idea of getting together with a bunch of friends and dressing in those red dresses and white hats from The Handmaid’s Tale… non-traditional, I guess, but definitely terrifying!

What's your favorite dish to cook?
It’s not really a dish, but I love to bake focaccia bread! It’s so lovely and salty and oily and it smells so gooooood…

Have you ever jumped out of a plane?
Yes! I did a sponsored sky dive for a children’s charity when I was 20 years old. It was amazing but I think once was definitely enough for me…!

What mythical creature would you want to be?
I would definitely be a fairy. I mean, they can fly, they get to be naughty all the time, and they only ever really eat cake – what’s not to love?!

Do you have any advice for other writers?
The best writing advice I’ve ever seen is ‘you can’t edit a blank page’. It’s so simple but so true. My advice to anyone starting out would be to give their inner critic a holiday and just write and write everything that’s in their head – you can turn it into something that makes sense afterwards.

What item, that you don't have already, would you most like to own?
I would love to have one of those cute old-fashioned campervans so that I could go on loads of adventures!

What's your favorite love story? (movie or book)

I really enjoy quirky romantic films where the characters have issues and/or don’t really ‘fit’ in society but then find someone who matches them perfectly and loves them for who they are. ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and ‘Secretary’ are two of my favourites.
