Meaning to all Those Words Authors Use

So many concepts to being a writer.
What's your theme?
Central Idea?

A theme is usual a word like love, strength, family.

In Fairy Fun - each character had to find love to become an adult and a part of their family and community.
Neither wanted to grow up. The theme was "Love"

A central idea is more a statement like "Only in taking chance can you find what you seek."

It is what you as the author want the reader to get out of your book.

Also it should be what drives the story. Like the center of a wheel it factors into all of the other elements.

This is a constant question that should be asked throughout the whole writing process. Then by

Plot = what does my character want and what type of chance do they have to take to find love.

Character - how does my character act when he attempting to take a chance on an uncertain course of action.

Scene - what type of setting will show his taking a chance

POV - who wants love the most and how can that character go about finding it.

Mood - is it a funny situation or is this serious

Language - again is it serious or lighthearted.

Remember the central idea can unstick a problem is you just keep playing with the central idea.

My, What a Character

One of the things I love about Tom Hanks is that he doesn't play the same character in every move he is in.

The same has to be true of your characters. Not only do they have to look different they have to have to have different characteristics.

Here are some of the questions you might ask about your characters.

Quirks - things they do that's different from other characters. (love funky shoes)
Hobbies - likes to cook
background - from a poor family
schooling- went to a small school where they knew everyone.


Here are some to think about when working on the plot -

How does the character impact the central idea?
What does the character want more than anything?
What's the opposite of that?
And how can I make it worst for them?

All of these questions tie into the other elements of the story. Like a wheel that goes round and round, each element plays off the others creating a better well developed story.


Favorite line - (but don't know who said it.) No wonder they almost lost Apollo 13 they had Forrest Gump as the captain.

Celebrate the love - Romantic tips

With spring in the air and flowers bloom, it is the perfect time to celebrate love.

1. Get out and enjoy a picnic with your lover. Spread out a blanket and hold hands while staring up at the sky.

2. Pick some wild flowers and take them home to your sweetheart. (my favorite are indian paintbrushes.)

3. Play a game of tag, do one says you have to run fast (It's more fun to get caught)

4. Dig out those short, shorts and do a little modeling for the coming seasons. Do a little strip teases between each outfit.

5. Share a bowl of ice cream.

As you can see it doesn't have to be anything big. Just time together can built a lasting relationship of fun and joy.
